Bettis Paces Matadors in Round One of Big West Championship

YORBA LINDA, Calif. - Freshman Grace Bettis is tied for 13th after firing a one-over par 73 in Monday's opening round of the Big West Women's Golf Championship while the CSUN women's golf team sits eighth at Yorba Linda Country Club.
The Matadors, who posted a team round of 307, had two players at even-par or better after the front nine. Bettis had two birdies, six pars and one bogey on her opening nine holes to make the turn at one-under. Sophomore Julia Johansson was one-under through six holes before finishing bogey-par-par to make the turn at even par. Bettis then had seven pars and a pair of bogeys on the back nine to finish the day at (+1) 73. Johansson, who is currently tied for 26th, was one-under through the 14th hole when three bogeys and one double bogey dropped her to (+4) 76 on the day.Â
As a team, the Matadors (307) are eighth heading into Tuesday's second round but are just eight strokes out of the top-five. UC Irvine (282) and Cal Poly (284) lead the team competition after one round as both teams are under-par through 18 holes. Long Beach State (291) is third followed by UC Davis (295), Hawai'i (299), Cal State Fullerton (301), UC Riverside (303), the Matadors and CSU Bakersfield (314).
UC Irvine's Megan Yang shot a blistering (-7) 65 and holds the first round individual lead by by five strokes over a trio of players, Long Beach State's Holland Shourds, Cal Poly's Caroline Cantlay and Cal Poly's Nicole Neale who collectively sit at (-2) 70.

"I'm extremely proud of the heart this team played with today. The coaching aside, it was just a joy to watch. We look forward to keeping the momentum rolling the next two days."
The Matadors will be paired with UC Riverside and CSU Bakersfield for the second round which gets underway Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m.

- In addition to CSUN's top two scorers, Kiran Sangha is tied for 34th at (+6) 78 after posting three birdies, six pars and nine bogeys.
- Hanne Sofie Borgen had 10 pars and eight bogeys and is currently 39th at (+8) 80.
- Freshman Tiffany Pak rounded out the Matador scoring as she is tied for 41st at (+11) 83. Pak had eight pars in her Big West Championship debut.
