Johansson Fires Second Round 69 at Big West Championship

YORBA LINDA, Calif. - Sophomore Julia Johansson fired a second-round 69 (-3), the low round of the day, to move into a tie for fifth after two rounds of the 2021 Big West Women's Golf Championship Tuesday at Yorba Linda Country Club.
Johansson, who was 26th after opening the championship with a 76 (+4) on Monday, posted three birdies and 15 pars on Tuesday to move up 21 spots on the individual leaderboard. At one-over 145 for the championship, Johansson heads into the final round just seven shots behind UC Irvine's Megan Yang who holds the individual lead at 138 (-6).
As a team, the Matadors followed up a 307 in round one with a 308 in round two to remain in eighth place heading into Wednesday's final round. Round one team leader UC Irvine (577) holds a one-shot lead over Cal Poly (578) with UC Davis (581) just four shots off the pace. Long Beach State (586) is fourth followed by UC Riverside (598), Cal State Fullerton (604), Hawai'i (605), the Matadors (615) and CSU Bakersfield (637).

"The team did great closing the round with birdies and solid par saves. We're just in a really good place as a team, they're playing their hearts out, and having fun. That's what college athletics is all about. Can't wait to tee it up tomorrow."
The Matadors will be paired with Hawai'i and CSU Bakersfield for the final round which gets underway Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. off the No. 10 tee.

- Grace Bettis, who was tied for 13th after an opening round 73 (+1), had a team-leading four birdies Tuesday but also had eight bogeys and one double bogey in a second round 78 (+6). At 151 (+7), Bettis is tied for 25th heading into the final round.Â
- Kiran Sangha followed up an opening round 78 with an 81 (+9) in the second round to slip from 34th into a tie for 37th at 159 (+15).
- Hanne Sofie Borgen posted her second consecutive round of 80 (+8) and is currently tied for 39th at 160 (+16).
- Freshman Tiffany Pak followed up Monday's round of 83 with an 84 (+12) on Tuesday and is 42nd at 167 (+23).
