8/28/2021 9:00:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The host USC Trojans handed CSUN a straight-set (25-21, 25-14, 25-20) loss to conclude the Trojan Invitational Saturday night at USC's Galen Center.
The Matadors finished the tournament 1-2 while the Trojans finish 2-1. Denver wound up undefeated in the four-team tournament at 3-0 while Campbell went 0-3.
KEY STATISTICS
• Sophomore Taylor Orshoff led the Matadors for the second straight match, putting down nine on 28 swings (.071). She also added a pair of blocks and two digs.
• Redshirt freshman Taylor Hunter, who was named to the Trojan Invitational All-Tournament Team, added seven kills on 13 errorless attacks to hit .538. Hunter also had a pair of blocks, including a solo stuff in the second set.
• Nicole Nevarez chipped in five kills (.091) while Lexi McLeod (.273) and Seyvion Waggoner (.000) each added four kills in the loss. McLeod tied libero Makayla Bradford for team-high honors with 10 digs.
• Setter Madison Klungel had a team-high 15 assists while also adding seven digs while fellow setter Carisa Barron posted 11 assists.Â
• A pair of Trojans recorded double figures in kills as Brooke Botkin put down a match-high 14 kills on .520 hitting while Emilia Weske added 10 kills (.333).
• USC out-hit the Matadors .366 to .160 and had a 46-36 edge in team digs.
COACH SUSIE TERRUSAÂ SAID
"We started the match very well and our tough serving put USC in trouble in the first set. But we need to keep working on being more consistent in how we play the game. I thought our middles played very well and I was very happy with how we competed tonight."
SET 1
Looking for their first-ever win at the Galen Center, the Matadors got off to a great start when kills from Waggoner and Nevarez followed by a Nevarez ace gave CSUN an early 10-4 lead. But an ensuing 9-3 run by USC erased the Matador lead as Klungel's service error pulled the hosts even at 13-13. CSUN maintained the lead at 14-13 when Orshoff put down a kill on the next point before the Trojans scored three straight to take the lead for good at 16-14. Two straight Matador points tied the score at 16-all and the score remained tied at 17-17 when USC used a 3-0 run to open up a 20-17 cushion. The hosts would lead by at least two the rest of the set before the final margin was 25-21.
SET 2
After leading for much of the opening set, the Matadors never led in the second frame as USC jumped out to a 6-3 lead and never looked back. Lauryn Anderson smashed down a Trojan overpass trimming the USC lead to 8-6 before four quick points boosted the hosts lead to 12-6. A Hunter kill out of a CSUN timeout cut the lead to 12-7 before the Trojans used a 7-1 run to extend the lead to 19-8. The Matadors were within eight (19-11) following an Anderson kill but could get no closer in dropping the set 25-14.
SET 3
The Trojans claimed four of the opening six points of the final set and led by as many as five (9-4) when USC put down a Matador overpass. A Waggoner kill followed by an Orshoff-Anderson block and a McLeod kill trimmed the lead to 9-7 but CSUN would get no closer the remainder of the set. The Trojans would lead by as many as seven before the Matadors staged a late rally to get within three at 21-18 on a Klungel ace. CSUN was still down three at 22-19 following an Orshoff kill before the hosts claimed three of the final four points in a 25-20 win.
