Matadors Battle Before Falling to Boise State in Four Sets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The CSUN Women's Volleyball team came back to win a gutsy first set and were a point away from forcing a fifth and deciding set before Boise State claimed a four-set victory in match three of the Sacramento State Invitational Friday evening at the Nest at Colberg Court.
Set scores were 28-30, 25-13, 25-21, 26-24. The Matadors slip to 1-6 on the season while the win is the Broncos' seventh in eight matches this season.
KEY STATISTICS
• Senior Lexi McLeod led the Matadors with a season-high 13 kills, hitting .259 on 27 swings. McLeod completed her 10th career double-double by adding a career-high 21 digs for CSUN.Â
• Sophomore Taylor Orshoff also reached double figures, putting down 11 kills on a team-high 39 attacks. Senior Nicole Nevarez added nine kills (.129) and a career-high five aces while Seyvion Waggoner chipped in eight kills (.111) and four blocks.
• Setter Carisa Barron recorded a season-high 22 assists to go with three digs while fellow setter Madison Klungel had 19 assists and five digs.
• The Matadors enjoyed their best hitting effort of the season in set one, connecting at a .406 clip but could not replicate that in the final two sets. For the match, CSUN hit .096 (34-24-104) compared to .280 (36-8-100) for the Hornets. The Broncos posted 15 team blocks in limiting the Matadors to a .151 hitting clip.
• Lauren Ohlinger and Danielle Boss both recorded double-doubles as Ohlinger led all hitters with 16 kills to go with 13 digs. Boss had 43 assists, 10 digs and seven kills from the setter spot.

"I thought we had our chances against a really good Boise State team to extend the match and we just didn't capitalize on the opportunities. Lexi had a great match for us tonight. We will regroup and be ready to go again tomorrow morning."
SET 1
The first set went to extra points before CSUN came out on top 30-28, snapping a 12-set skid for the Matadors. in a tightly contested set, neither team led by more than three points at any point. Trailing 9-6, CSUN put together a 4-0 run, capped by an Orshoff kill, to take a 10-9 lead. The Matadors also led by one at 17-16 and again at 22-21 when the Broncos scored twice to re-take the lead 23-22. A McLeod kill followed by a Lauryn Anderson/Orshoff block set CSUN up with set point at 24-23. Boise State would save three set points before Orshoff's fifth kill of the set followed by a Bronco hitting error gave the Matadors a 30-28 win.
SET 2
Boise State jumped out to an 8-3 lead and the Matadors had trouble threatening the rest of the set. The Broncos, who hit .378 in the set, led by as many as 12 points before setting on a 25-13 final.
SET 3
The Matadors turned the tables in the third set as McLeod's kill gave CSUN an early 7-3 lead. The Matadors would lead by as many as six points three times, the last coming at 15-9, when Boise State engineered a 10-1 run to take a 19-16 lead. Anderson's kill kept CSUN within two at 19-17 but the Matadors would get no closer in dropping a 25-21 decision. Â
SET 4
After the Broncos opened up a sizable early lead, a co-block by Anderson and Seyvion Waggoner capped a 4-0 Matador run to pull CSUN within 9-7. Still trailing by four (15-11), a 7-0 run by the Matadors - highlighted by three Nevarez aces - gave CSUN an 18-15 lead. The Matadors maintained a three-point edge at 22-19 and still led by three at set point when a block by Orshoff and Taylor Hunter set CSUN up with set point at 24-21. But an Ohlinger kill fueled a set-clinching 5-0 run by Boise State which sealed the come-from-behind 26-24 win.
