CSUN Posts First Big West Opening Win Since 2014 with Victory at Hawai'i
9/24/2021 12:22:00 AM | Women's Soccer
O'AHU, Hawaii---CSUN Women's Soccer (2-9, 1-0 Big West) scored two second-half goals to help hold off Hawai'i (0-5-1, 0-1 Big West) for a 3-2 win to start Big West Conference play on Thursday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Gabriela Robles broke a 1-1 tie in the second half and Brooke Mobeck knocked in what would be the game-winning goal late in the half while Cindy Arteaga hit the net earlier in the contest. Amanda Delgado picked up two saves to earn the win in net. The victory gave the Matadors their first win to start Big West play since the 2014 season.
Hawai'i finished with an 11-8 edge in shots while CSUN had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Matadors were also ahead in corner kicks, 4-3. A total of 37 fouls were committed in the match with CSUN whistled for 21 of them. CSUN's Arteaga, Ashly Torres and Briana Rios and the Rainbow Wahine's Julia Wolfe saw yellow cards.
FIRST HALF
In what would be a physical contest, six fouls were committed in the first 15-plus minutes of the match. Hawai'i was the aggressor earlier on, recording the game's first shot in the 10th minute of play. After a CSUN foul in the 16th minute, Hawai'i played the ball down the middle of the field where Eliza Ammendolia delivered a flick pass to Kelci Sumida. With the ball in CSUN's box, Sumida sent a looping shot that sailed over the hands of Delgado into the net.
Trailing by one, the Matadors would turn the tables and begin to find scoring opportunities in the ensuing minutes. A long pass up the field gave CSUN a chance to attack the Hawai'i defense leading to the equalizer in the 29th minute. Corralling a pass from Sydney Gilbert, Arteaga advanced down the left wing and into the teeth of the Hawai'i defense. Arteaga found room at less than 15 yards out and delivered a shot past goalkeeper Lauren Marquez to even the match at 1-1.
CSUN held the Rainbow Wahine to one shot over nearly the final 30 minutes while Gilbert and Ashley Cruz missed wide of the net down the stretch of the half for the Matadors.
SECOND HALF
Out of the intermission, Delgado made a routine save off a long shot from Maki Kono. Moments later, Hawai'i committed a foul just outside the CSUN box, giving the Matadors good field positioning. Arteaga almost hit the netting off the free kick but Marquez leaped to deflect the ball out of the bounds. Awarded a corner kick in the 51st minute, CSUN struck with the go-ahead goal as Rios found Gilbert who headed the ball to Robles near the net. Robles finished the play with a right-footed shot past the defense to put the Matadors ahead 2-1.
The Rainbow Wahine pressed the CSUN defense throughout the half, looking for the tying goal but the Matadors would be up for the challenge. Delgado faced eight shots in the period, making a pair of saves while snuffing out potential scoring chances by leaving her post. Still leading by a goal, the Matadors played up the midfield following a Hawai'i foul in the 77th minute. The Matadors advanced the ball further and would get a few touches atop the box until Mobeck gained possession inside the Hawai'i box. Marquez attempted to break up the play but Mobeck delivered a quick shot into an open net to put CSUN up 3-1.
The Mobeck tally proved to be a key insurance goal as Hawai'i rallied for its second goal in the 86th minute. Sumida cut the lead to 3-2 with her second goal of the match on a long drive up the right side of the field. In an exciting final four minutes of play, the Matadors nearly added to their lead on a Cruz shot that was blocked and a rebounding attempt from Angelica Claiborne that was stopped by Marquez. CSUN's defense would stand tall in the closing seconds, withstanding a final drive from Hawai'i to seal a victory.
GAME NOTES
Mobeck scored her team-leading second goal of the season in the second half while Robles netted her first career goal. With Arteaga and Robles scoring in the match, 11 Matadors have hit the net this season. Arteaga was credited for her third assist of the campaign on Mobeck's goal.
The win was the Matadors' first conference-opening victory since beating UC Santa Barbara 1-0 on October 3, 2014. CSUN had lost three straight conference openers from 2017-19. The Matadors have now won five of eight all-time games in Hawai'i.
