FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer embarks on Big West Conference play this week. The Matadors make the trek to Hawai'i on Thursday night at 10 p.m. (PST) in the conference opener. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+. CSUN wraps up the weekend with a Sunday afternoon match against UC Davis at Matador Soccer Field beginning at 1 p.m.
Last weekend, the Matadors wrapped up non-conference play by dropping a pair of games. CSUN (1-9-0) fell to UC San Diego 2-1 last Thursday at Matador Soccer Field before losing 4-0 at USC this past Sunday.Â
It would be a goal in the 59th minute that propelled UC San Diego past CSUN in the teams' non-conference contest. The Matadors fell behind in the first half before Cora Willcot evened the match in the 28th minute off a cross from Christiane Sundstrom. Kennedy Carter, who made a penalty kick in the opening half, broke the tie in the second half, which proved to be the game-winner. Elizabeth Bornhauser earned the start in net and totaled six saves.
CSUN would battle USC in a tight one-goal game for most of Sunday's match but the Trojans' high-powered offense broke through for three goals over a six-minute span to put the game away. Jada Talley had the lone goal until the 70th minute when USC took over the game with a barrage of scoring plays. Amanda Delgado racked up two saves in net, holding the Trojans to just a single tally in the first half.
Heading into league play, the Matadors have nine goals, all of which have been scored by different players. Sundstrom leads the team with three points after picking up her assist on Thursday. Other goal scorers this season include Alyssa Aguilar, Erin Anderson, Ashley Cruz, Kacie Garrity, Sydney Gilbert, Brooke Mobeck, Sophie Yanez and Willcot. Cindy Arteaga has a team-high two assists to lead the team. In front of the net, Delgado is fourth in the Big West in saves with 33 while she is followed closely by Bornhauser in fifth place with 32 saves.
CSUN leads the all-time series with Hawai'i 10-5-1. The last five meetings in the series have been decided by one goal in the series with the Matadors winning three of those games. Hawai'i though has won the last two matches, both by a 2-1 score in overtime. Two years ago, Kayla Ryan had two goals against the Matadors including the game-winner in the 92nd minute. Willcot had the Matadors' tally in the loss. CSUN has posted four of seven victories all-time in Hawai'i.
The Matadors are 8-6-3 against UC Davis in the all-time series. The Aggies though have won the last two meetings including a 2-1 decision in Davis in 2019. Four of the last five meetings have gone into overtime with three being scoreless draws. UC Davis also beat CSUN 1-0 in overtime in the last match at Matador Soccer Field in 2018. CSUN's last win over the Aggies came in 2014 by a 4-0 score.
CSUN has gone 7-9-3 in Big West openers since joining the league in 2001. The Matadors have lost their last three conference openers and have not posted in a win to start league play since defeating UC Santa Barbara in 2014.
A Closer Look at Hawai'i
The Rainbow Wahine (0-4-1) is looking for their first win of 2021 when they host CSUN. Hawai'i last played on Sept. 8 when it dropped a 3-2 decision at Idaho. Prior to the Idaho match, the Rainbow Wahine had been shut out in four consecutive matches. Hawai'i advanced to the Big West Tournament for the first time in team history in 2019. The team was picked to finish sixth in Big West Preseason Coaches Poll. Head coach Michele Nagamine has led the program since 2011.
Krista Peterson and Kelci Sumida have the two Hawai'i goals this season. Lauren Marquez has the most minutes in net for Hawai'i to go with 25 saves. The duo of Kayla Ryan and Eliza Ammendolia were placed on the Preseason All-Big West Team as Ryan scored seven goals in 2019 while Ammendolia had four assists with a goal.
A Closer Look at UC Davis
The Aggies are one of two Big West teams (with the other being UC Irvine) to come into league play with a winning record at 5-3. UC Davis has won three consecutive matches after beating Saint Mary's last Thursday. After finishing eighth in the Big West in 2019, the Aggies were placed eighth in the Big West Preseason Coaches Poll. Head coach Tracy Hamm took over the program prior to the 2019 season. UC Davis visits CSU Bakersfield to start league play on Thursday.
Nine Aggies have goals this season with the quartet of Leslie Fregoso, Emma Hasco, Sami Ruelas and Emma Vane have two goals apiece. A Preseason All-Big West selection, Fregoso has a team-best seven points to go with 29 shots taken. Nicki Rucki has a 1.13 goals-against-average with 26 saves on the year in front of the net.
