NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i defeated CSUN 76-67 in Big West Women's Basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Matadome.
FIRST HALF
CSUN led 11-6 midway through the first quarter before Hawai'i mounted an 11-2 charge that was halted by a Sydney Woodley fast break layup at the first quarter buzzer. Both teams shot 7-of-13 during the opening 10 minutes as the Rainbow Wahine led 17-15. Hawai'i extended the lead to 19-15 before the Matadors scored the next eight in a row in a run that was capped off by a Woodley layup. The score was tied at 23 at the second quarter media timeout. CSUN came out of the break by scoring four consecutive points. Hawai'i recorded a 10-0 run to end the first half and led 36-29.
SECOND HALF
CSUN made nine of 13 field goals in the third quarter to reduce the Hawai'i lead to 56-50 after 30 minutes. A Tess Amundsen three-pointer with 7:29 remaining in the fourth quarter made it a 61-55 game. The Rainbow Wahine responded with four straight to earn a double-digit lead for the first time. The Hawai'i lead stayed between 7-10 points for the next 5+ minutes before Kayanna Spriggs' put back at 1:52 again created a seven-point game. Daejah Phillips' three-pointer on the ensuing CSUN possession keyed a 7-0 spurt that put the game out of reach of the Matadors.
ACCORDING TO INTERIM HEAD COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"The biggest stat that stands out is the turnovers we committed in the second quarter. They turned into fast breakpoints on the other end for Hawai'i. It is hard to win against a good team like Hawai'i that makes you work so hard in the half court. It was nice to see three in double figures. Kayanna is attacking the rim with a lot more confidence. If she can three or four offensive rebounds that can turn into easy points without having to run an offensive play for her. We are disappointed, but we will go back and regroup and come back out against UC San Diego."
THE NUMBERS
CSUN made 15 steals on the way to forcing 24 Hawai'i turnovers. The Matadors turned the ball over 25 times as the Rainbow Wahine made 15 steals. CSUN committed a season-high 29 fouls which resulted in Hawai'i attempting 36 free throws and making 29 of them (80.6%). The Rainbow Wahine committed 17 fouls sending the Matadors to the line 22 times where CSUN knocked down 16 attempts (72.7%). Hawai'i outrebounded the Matadors 32-26.
