2/3/2022 9:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball
LA JOLLA, Calif.—For the third consecutive game at least three CSUN players scored in double figures as the Matadors defeated UC San Diego 53-45 in Big West Women's Basketball play Thursday night at RIMAC Arena.
FIRST HALF
The opening five minutes featured the defenses of both teams. Both squads could only make one field goal in their first six attempts as the score was tied 3-3 at the media timeout. Anaiyah Tu'ua broke an 8+ minute scoring drought with a layup with 29 seconds remaining. She was fouled on the play, but she missed the free throw attempt.
Rachel Harvey grabbed the offensive rebound and passed back to Tu'ua. Tu'ua found Sydney Woodley for a short jumper and a 7-3 lead. CSUN held UCSD without a point for the final 9:13 of the first quarter and led by four as the frame ended.
The three UCSD points in the first quarter were the fewest scored by a CSUN opponent since the format was put in place in 2015. The previous low was four which occurred on three different occasions, most recently on Dec. 19, 2018, against San Jose State.
The Matadors opened the second by scoring six straight points. The Tritons called timeout 1:34 into the quarter. After missing 13 consecutive field goal attempts over 11+ minutes Parker Montgomery connected on a three-pointer to make it 13-6 with just over seven to go. Both teams went scoreless for over four minutes until Montgomery sank a pair of free throws with just under four to play. Jordyn Jackson broke a 1-for-7 stretch for CSUN with a floater to create a 15-8 score.
The Matadors would hold the Tritons to 2-of-23 shooting in the first half and took a 17-8 lead into halftime. CSUN forced 16 UC San Diego turnovers in the first half and made nine steals. Woodley led all scorers in the first half with eight points and made three steals.
SECOND HALF
Tess Amundsen kicked off the second half with five straight points to push the lead to 22-8. Montgomery's three-pointer broke a five-minute scoreless span that dated back to the first half 2:16 into the third. A deep Amundsen three-pointer was followed by the first UCSD made two-point field goal of the game, an Emily Cangelosi layup midway through the third quarter.
Sydney Brown followed with a layup of her own and she was fouled on the play. Brown completed the three-point play out of the media timeout to cut the CSUN advantage to 25-16. Brown completed a second straight and one to make it 25-19. Woodley responded with a jumper on the ensuing Matador possession. Madison Baxter connected on a three-pointer the next time down for the Tritons. Brown's three-pointer was followed by Jackson's jumper for a 31-25 score. Bridget Mullings drew the Titans to four. Meghann Henderson's three-pointer and Jackson's layup pushed the lead back to 36-27 which would be the score as the period came to an end.
A 7-0 UCSD run to start the fourth quarter cut the Matadors' lead to 38-34 at the 7:36 mark. San Diego native Kayanna Spriggs ended the spurt with a put-back of a Jackson a little under a minute later. Spriggs was fouled on the next CSUN possession, and she made both free throw attempts to extend the lead to eight. The lead went back to six when Mullings' layup went in shortly before the media timeout midway through the period.
Jackson and Brianna Claros exchanged layups out of the media timeout. After a CSUN miss, Montgomery created a 44-41 game with her three three-pointer of the game at 3:17. The Matadors called timeout with 2:31 remaining. After drawing two UCSD fouls, Meghann Henderson sank a three-pointer with 1:46 to go. Brown responded with a layup for the Tritons. Montgomery drew an offensive foul on the Matadors as nine seconds came off the clock.
Cangelosi missed a three-pointer. Woodley grabbed the rebound with 37.4 seconds left and was fouled. She made both. Down 49-43, UC San Diego called timeout to advance the ball. The Tritons had two chances but missed both three-point attempts. Jackson's layup at the 18-second mark made it 51-43. UCSD called timeout to advance the ball once again. The Matadors forced a miss. Spriggs got the rebound, was fouled, and made both attempts. Chamberlin's floater at the buzzer created the final 53-45 score.
ACCORDING TO INTERIM HEAD COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"Our players knew it would take a collective effort and committed to playing five guards most of the night with a lot of communication and 1-5 switches."
"Our rotations and scramble defense were suburb most of the night against a very experienced UCSD team. Our guards did a great job of rebounding which was a key against a team that shoots a lot of threes."
"I am extremely proud of the team effort with huge minutes and energy from our bench tonight."
