2/18/2022 5:20:00 PM | Softball
SAN DIEGO—CSUN split a pair of games on day two of the Campbell/Cartier Classic Friday at the SDSU Softball Stadium.
GAME 1
Freshman Alexis Martinez struck out 12 Southern Utah batters as the Matadors shut out the Thunderbirds 4-0 in the opener.
Southern Utah's Gianna Carosone recorded a double on the first pitch of the game. Martinez responded by striking out Jayne Sepulveda. Josey White grounded out to first, allowing Carosone to move to third. Martinez struck out Reilly Williams on a 3-2 count to end the inning. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Kennedi Sorensen homered to left to break the seal.
Martinez retired four in a row before Dream Weaver opened the Thunderbirds' third with a single. Martinez bounced back by striking out Sophia Masut. Carosone lined out to right before Martinez struck out Sepulveda to wrap up the frame.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Mikayla Carman doubled. Alexis Lemus singled to left center to plate Carman as she took second on the throw. Jaymi Steward grounded out to second which allowed Lemus to move up a base. Keimon Winston, the Southern Utah starter, pitched around Sorensen and ended up walking the CSUN catcher. The Matadors called for a double steal which was successful as Sorensen stole second while Lemus scored on a Southern Utah error on the play. Sami Garcia was hit by a Winston pitch. With Aaliyah Swan at the plate, Garcia was thrown out at second trying to steal for the third out.
Martinez struck out two more in the Thunderbirds' fourth to bring her count to eight. Vinessa Nunez singled in Swan in the bottom of the inning to increase the Matadors' lead to 4-0. With two outs in the top of the fifth, Weaver singled to center. Gonzalez got Masut to pop out to second to finish the inning. Sorensen walked for the second time with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
Martinez struck out the side in order in the top of the seventh to reach her 12-strikeout total. Martinez's strikeout total is the most by strikeouts in a game by a CSUN pitcher since Mar. 7, 2019, when Jillian James struck out 12 CSU Bakersfield batters. She did not walk a batter as she tossed a three-hitter. Martinez needed 95 pitches (67 for strikes) to face only three above the minimum.
Six different Matadors recorded a hit as CSUN improved to 30-0 all-time against Southern Utah (dating back to the start of the all-time series in 1988).
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Alexis set the tone in the circle and did a great job throughout the entire game. Southern Utah made some good adjustments offensively and Martinez did a great job recognizing it. Kennedi has been consistent in every at-bat and is a spark plug for our offense. It was another great team win."
GAME 2
Army West Point defeated CSUN 4-2 in the nightcap for the Matadors.
CSUN stranded two runners on base in the top of the first while Army West Point left a runner on in each of the first two innings. The Matadors got on the board in the top of the third when Sorensen drove in Lemus (who had doubled) with a two-out single.
The Black Knights took the lead with four two-out runs in the bottom of the third. The rally was highlighted by a Jiselle Castano three-run home run. Lemus' triple in the top of the fifth scored Carman to cut the Army West Point lead in half.
Swan worked out a one-out walk tin the top of the sixth. Pinch-hitter Samantha Kwiatkowski reached on a fielder's choice to second base. Swan advanced to second on a fielding error by Black Knights' shortstop Angelina Bebek. Pinch-hitter Kaylee Escutia fouled out before a third pinch-hitter, Kylie Galindo, flew out to center for the third out.
Brook Mitchell and Kayla Edwards each registered two hits to pace Army West Point. CSUN pitchers Kenedee Jamerson and Allie Gardiner limited the Black Knights to seven hits. Gardiner struck out three as she pitched the final three innings.
Lemus and Sorensen combined for four of the five CSUN hits (two each). Julie Duong went the distance for Army West Point. She struck out six and walked two. Friday's CSUN game against the Black Knights was the season opener for Army West Point.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Army jumped on us early and didn't have enough to respond. We didn't come out with the same energy and focus. We told the team that they must learn to sustain and get themselves ready for every game no matter if it's a single game, doubleheader, or pair of games with a break in the middle. Mikayla and Lemus had a great game offensively, but we must have better at-bats and more productive at-bats. We learned a lot today and we will learn from it and get ready to compete tomorrow."
