CSUN Opens Nutter Classic With 9-0 Victory Over Bethune-Cookman

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—CSUN defeated Bethune-Cookman 9-0 in the Matadors opening game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Thursday afternoon at the Big League Dreams Sports Parks.
Jaymi Steward earned the Matadors the lead in the top of the third with a two-out, two-run opposite-field home run to left field that plated Alexis Lemus. The Matadors recorded three consecutive singles with one out in the top of the fourth to load the bases. Sydney Freijanes doubled, scoring Kaylee Escutia and Aaliyah Swan to make it 4-0.
Kenedee Jamerson retired nine Wildcats in a row before allowing a one-out single to Briana Paysinger in the bottom of the fourth. Kennedi Sorensen threw out Paysinger attempting to steal second. Jamerson quickly recorded the third out.
The Matadors scored five runs in the top of the sixth. Escutia began the frame with a home run. Lemus drove in a pair with a double. Sami Garcia added an RBI with the fifth run coming in on the front end of a double steal.
Bethune-Cookman put runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth with one out. Paysinger grounded back to Jamerson who threw to third to get the out. Elise Gibbs grounded out too short to end the game.
In addition to her home run, Steward was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Lemus went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Escutia and Vinessa Nunez both recorded 2-for-3 performances. Jamerson tossed a four-hitter. She struck out four and walked one. Bethune-Cookman fell to 4-7 on the year.

"Kenedee set the tone in the circle and our offense kept the pressure on for the entire game. I am excited for Kaylee to get her first home run! We did a great job today of coming out and taking the first game of the weekend."
