GAME 1
CSUN jumped out to an early lead and held off a feisty Seattle University squad 8-7 in Friday's first game.
The Matadors loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first inning. Kaylee Escutia's infield single drove in Alexis Lemus to break the seal. The bases remained loaded as Sydney Freijanes' infield single plated Jaymi Steward. With the count 0-2, Jordan Kaeka singled through the left side to drive in two runs. Freijanes scored on a Grace Luderer (who came on in relief of Izzy Dino) wild pitch for a 5-0 score.
CSUN pitcher Alexis Martinez retired the first seven Seattle U batters she faced before giving up a one-out home run to Katie Walling in the top of the third inning. The Matadors matched the tally in the bottom of the inning when Vinessa Nunez scored on a SU error with two outs. Steward drove in Ariel Gomez with a single for a 7-1 score. Kennedi Sorensen's infield single scored Lemus to increase the lead to seven.
Walling singled to lead off the Seattle fifth. Pinch-hitter Hannah Sasaki reached on a CSUN error that allowed Walling to advance to third. A second Matador error during Tai Wilson's at-bat allowed the second Redhawks' run to score. A passed ball allowed the runners to move up again including the third SU run. Madison Kahwaty's double drove in the third unearned run of the inning.
Allie Gardiner relieved Martinez with one out. Her first batter was Carly Nance who struck out on three pitches. Kalyn Hill singled up the middle to plate Kahwaty and cut the lead to 8-5. Gardiner walked the next two Redhawks to load the bases. Walling went up in the count 2-1 before fouling out to third to complete the inning.
A CSUN error on a Seattle double steal allowed a run to score in the top of the sixth. Nance's RBI double later in the inning reduced the Matadors' advantage to 8-7. Kamryn Coleman popped up to first on the first pitch of the seventh. Madokoro would line out to first on an 0-1 count for the second out. Walling fouled out to right on the first pitch of her at-bat for the final out of the game.
Escutia, Sorensen, and Aaliyah Swan each recorded two hits. Lemus scored twice. The Matadors would outhit the Redhawks 10-5. Walling was responsible for two of the SU hits and she scored twice. CSUN committed four errors which resulted in only one Seattle U earned run.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Seattle wasn't our prettiest game as a whole, but we pulled it through. Sometimes, we won't play well, but we will find a way to win."
GAME 2
A Mikayla Ramos home run to lead off the top of the sixth keyed a three-run rally as the Cyclones defeated CSUN 8-3 in the final game of the day.
Iowa State broke through in the top of the third when Ramos' sacrifice fly scored Lea Nelson. A CSUN error on the play allowed Carli Spelhaug to reach home and make it 2-0.
Freijanes doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Mikayla Carman singled to center to drive in Freijanes as Carman took second on an Iowa State error. Saya Swain relieved Karlie Charles with Lemus coming up. Lemus' grounder to short, allowed Carman to advance to third. Steward singled up the middle to drive in Carman and tie the score.
Ramos led off the sixth and worked the count to 3-2 against Kenedee Jamerson before hitting the game-winning home run. It was only the second hit of the game for Iowa State to that point. Pinch-hitter Angelita Fuentes doubled. Gardiner relieved Jamerson. Milaysia Ochoa tripled off Gardiner for a 4-2 game. Kaylee Pond capped off the scoring when her infield single drove in Fuentes. Iowa State added three runs in the top of the seventh.
Freijanes worked out the first walk of the game for CSUN to begin the bottom of the seventh. Nunez was hit by a Swain pitch to give the Matadors runners at first and second. Carman grounded out to second to allow both runners to move up a base. Lemus' grounder to short scored Freijanes for the final run of the game.
Ochoa was 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Cyclones (9-2). The Iowa State pitchers limited the Matadors to five hits and struck out eight. Despite only giving up the two hits, Jamerson was the tough-luck loser. She was charged with only one earned run in her five innings. Only three of the eight runs allowed by Jamerson, and Gardiner were earned as the Matadors committed five errors in the game
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Iowa State did a great job tonight. Their offense adjusted throughout the game, and we must learn from it. We didn't play sharp defense and the 60-feet battle today. We fought, but we have to sustain it until the last pitch of the game. We have to have a short memory, learn, and be ready for tomorrow."
UP NEXT
