SAN DIEGO—The University of San Diego scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to defeat CSUN 2-1 on the final day of the USD Tournament for the Matadors Sunday morning.
The teams were scoreless through four innings before CSUN broke through in the top of the fifth. Mia Stankiewicz singled to lead off the inning. Stankiewicz advanced to second on the play on a San Diego error. Mikayla Carman successfully sacrificed Stankiewicz to third. Alexis Lemus drove in Stankiewicz with a single to center.
CSUN starter Kenedee Jamerson struck out the side in the fourth and retired nine in a row before Clariesse Santiago singled with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Arisa Tovar followed with a single to center. Jamerson came back to strike out pinch-hitter Noelle Hee looking on five pitches to get out of the inning. Sami Garcia singled in the sixth. She attempted to score on Kaylee Escutia's single but was thrown out at the plate, keeping the score 1-0.
Joecilla Roberts singled to begin the USD seventh. Ashley Daugherty's sac bunt advanced pinch-runner Savannah Alacron to second. Malia Benson grounded out to first, but Roberts could not move up a base. Santiago singled through the right side to plate Roberts and tie the game. Tovar reached on an error. Mikalyn Emanuelli singled to load the bases. Allie Gardiner relieved Jamerson. Her first batter was Alexia Torculas, who drove in the game-winning run with a single to right to score Santiago.
Garcia, a redshirt junior, recorded her first career three-hit game as she was 3-for-3 on the day. Lemus was 2-for-4. Torculas, Roberts, and Santiago (two each) combined for six of the nine San Diego (11-16) hits.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Hats off to USD fighting and winning at the end. We played a good game, and it didn't go in our favor today. We still have two more games to help us prepare for the start of conference play."
