CLAREMONT, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo (11-10) earned a pair of road victories on Saturday, defeating the Claremont Mudd-Scripps 10-8 before beating Pomona-Pitzer 11-10. GAME 1 RECAP
CSUN and the Claremont Mudd-Scripps (CMS) battled to a scoreless tie for nearly the first four minutes before Telek opened up the scoring with a goal. Valeria Martinez would hit the back of the net with 12 seconds on the clock in the first period but Emma Brezoczky hit a buzzer beater to cut the CSUN lead to 2-1. In the second period, CSUN's defense blanked the Athenas while Telek and Kylee Jansen hit the net to extend the Matador lead to 4-1 at intermission.Â
The third period saw only two goals scored combined between the two teams as CSUN extended to a 5-1 lead on a goal from Telek at the five-minute mark before CMS answered with a goal from Olivia Cairns.
The script would flip though in the fourth period as 11 goals were recorded between the two teams. The Matadors scored the first three goals, two of which on power plays, to build an 8-2 lead, but the Athenas roared back with a 4-1 run to cut the lead in half. Tatum Scarry netted a timely CSUN goal with 1:38 left to play that gave the Matadors a 10-6 lead. CMS though showed little quit in the final minute-plus, scoring twice more on goals from Cooper McKenna to pull to within 10-8. CSUN would regain possession with less than 30 seconds to play and manage the clock in the final ticks to secure a win.
Shelby Hovanesian racked up three assists in the match while Pal and Martinez had two apiece. Jessica Matkovich picked up two steals in the win.
CSUN Goals: Telek 4, Bockstahler, Jansen, Martinez, Pal, Scarry, Smeltzer,

GAME 2 RECAP
Pal scored two first-quarter goals to lead CSUN to an early 2-1 lead over Pomona-Pitzer after the first eight minutes of play. Hovanesian also hit the back of the net early in the second quarter before late goals from Pal and Jansen gave CSUN an 8-4 lead at intermission.
The Sagehens' Namlhun Jachung cut the CSUN lead to 8-5 in the opening minute of the third quarter but Pomona-Pitzer could not pull closer in the period. Tatiana Smeltzer scored the Matadors' first goal of the second half while Jansen hit the net at the one-minute mark to increase the lead to 10-5.

ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"We did a nice job of controlling the game [against CMS], but being ahead 7-2 and then giving up three unanswered goals in the fourth wasn't the way we were hoping to finish the game. Proud of our freshman and how they are stepping up in important games."
"Hats off to Pomona-Pitzer, they gave us a good battle and forced us to do things we typically don't like to do. Being up 10-5, we talked about staying poised and keeping our composure if they scored a few goals, so to see our team stick together through some adversity was a big a step."

CSUN wraps up the weekend with two more matches on Sunday at Whittier College. The Matadors face the host Poets at 9 a.m. before taking on No. 21 Brown at noon.
