Matadors Drop 3-0 Decision at Fourth-Ranked Hawai'i

HONOLULU, O'ahu - Fourth-ranked Hawai'i topped CSUN for the second straight night as the Warriors won 3-0 in a Big West Conference match Saturday evening at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Set scores were 25-11, 25-17, 26-24 as Hawai'i improves to 18-3 overall and 3-1 in the Big West. The loss drops the Matadors to 5-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Freshman Lorenzo Bertozzi came off the bench to tie for team-high honors with seven kills (.214). Redshirt junior Luke Krzmarzick also had seven kills (.278) along with a pair of aces for the Matadors.
• Redshirt junior Daniel Wetter added five kills (.167) and Griffin Walters chipped in four kills (-.125). One night after hitting .279 in a 3-1 loss to the Warriors, CSUN hit .120 as setter Donovan Constable posted 24 assists and two digs.
• Spyros Chakas led Hawai'i with 13 kills (.500) while Dimitrio Mouclias added 12 kills on .706 hitting.
SET 1
The Matadors surrendered the first six points of the match and played from behind the entire set. After an early CSUN timeout, a kill by Kyle Hobus ended the run but the Warriors would put together a 6-2 run to extend the lead to 12-3, forcing a second Matador timeout. CSUN was then whistled for a setting error pushing the Hawaii lead to 10 at 13-3. The lead remained double digits the remainder of the set as Hawaii, which out-hit CSUN .632-.100 in the set, took a 25-11 win.
SET 2
After a Warrior hitting error pulled CSUN even at 4-4, the hosts scored two straight to lead by two at 6-4. Hawaii still led by two at 8-6 when the Warriors engineered a 5-1 run to open up a 13-7 lead. Still down by seven (16-9), the Matadors rallied behind a 5-1 run to close to within 17-14 following a triple block by Allen, Constable and Hobus. But an ensuing 4-0 run by the hosts pushed the lead back to seven at 21-14 and Hawaii took a 25-17 win when Chakas put down a Matador overpass.Â

After holding a pair of one-point leads early on, the Matadors used a Wetter kill to lead 10-8. After the Warriors scored two straight to tie the score, a 3-0 CSUN run, highlighted by a pair of Krzmarzick aces, gave the Matadors their largest lead at 13-10. CSUN would lead by three on a pair of occasions, the last at 15-12, when a 3-0 by Hawaii tied the score for the eighth time. The two teams would trade sideouts until a Walters kill gave the Matadors set point at 24-23. Hawaii saved the set point and would then put up consecutive blocks to win the set in extra points, 26-24.
