Matadors Earn Split at Whittier Invite
3/27/2022 9:47:00 AM | Women's Water Polo
WHITTIER, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo won at the buzzer to beat Whittier 8-7 before falling to No. 21 Brown 13-11 in overtime on Sunday at the Whittier Mini Invite. Goalkeeper Meghan Lopez hit a shot at the buzzer to knock off the host Poets in the opener. Anna Pal led the way offensively on the day with six total goals.
GAME 1 RECAP
Kylee Jansen opened up the scoring against Whittier at the 4:27 mark of the first period but Amelia Bennett netted the tying goal on a power play two minutes later. The Poets took the lead in the second quarter behind a tally from Ally Burke before the Matadors evened the match at 2-2 courtesy of Pal. Near the end of the second period, Jansen dented the twine with her second goal, giving the Matadors a 3-2 edge after 16 minutes.
Neither side could crack the scoring column in the third period until Bryanna Santis squared the game once more with 3:23 on the clock. A minute later, Pal gave the Matadors the lead before Jansen netted another tally on a power play, putting CSUN on top by its biggest margin at 5-3.
Dorottya Telek and Jansen hit fourth-quarter goals for CSUN but the Poets would rally for four tallies, three of which scored by Burke, to even the game at 7-7. With two minutes remaining, the Matadors withstood a late possession from Whittier to regain the ball with five seconds remaining. After a CSUN timeout, Lopez brought the ball up on top and delivered a long distance shot from straight away and pierced the corner of the net to send the Matadors to an 8-7 victory.
CSUN Goals: Jansen 4, Pal 2, Lopez, Telek
CSUN Saves: Lopez 11
GAME 2 RECAP
The Bears stormed out to a 2-0 lead before Pal hit the net at the six-minute mark of the first period. Lily Weiser though made two more Brown goals as the Matadors looked up at a 4-2 deficit after one period. CSUN received goals from Helena Sandhagen, Telek and Pal but could not cut into the Bears' lead in the second quarter. Brown countered with three goals of its own in the second and took a 7-5 lead into intermission.
CSUN would control the third period, shutting out the Bears while hitting the net three times to go in front. After Pal's fourth goal of the match, Sandhagen tied the game before Telek gave the Matadors their first lead with 2:45 on the clock. Pal though would be lost for the remainder of the game in the third period due to exclusions.
In the fourth, Brown pushed back in front on goals from Sierra Martin and Claire Pisani but the Matadors battled back to tie the game when Jessica Matkovich struck the net with 3:05 remaining. Neither side would break through in the final three minutes as the game went into overtime tied at 9-9.
The Matadors reclaimed the lead in the first overtime on a power play goal from Sandhagen. However, Brown scored the next two times on goals from Zoe King to take back the lead. Attrition would become a factor for CSUN in the second overtime as both Telek and Hovanesian were whistled for their third exclusions. Brown took control in the final overtime with goals from Martin and Weiser to secure a win.
CSUN Goals: Pal 4, Sandhagen 3, Telek 2, Matkovich, Smeltzer
CSUN Saves: Lopez 8
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Getting back to campus late last night and then playing early this morning showed [against Whittier], we came out flat and never really woke up. But once again this young squad shows up in the end with a buzzer beater from Meghan Lopez. Fun way to end a game that we didn't play our best in and still come away with a win.
"Spotting a good team like Brown four goals right away was a deficit we couldn't recover from. I was proud of the effort we showed to battle all the way back and force overtime, but in the end, we were missing three starters and couldn't execute on offense enough to get the victory. We went 4-1 on the weekend overall, which is a good showing, but losing in overtime is something we must learn from."
