4/13/2022 5:42:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo wraps up the regular season this Saturday when it hosts No. 10 Long Beach State at Matador Pool starting at noon. Live stats will be provided for the match.
CSUN (12-12, 0-5 Big West) is already locked into the No. 7 seed in next week's Big West Women's Water Polo Championship. The Matadors will play in an opening round match on Thursday at 2:45 p.m. against either UC Irvine or UC San Diego. UCI and UCSD square off in their regular season finale on Friday, which will determine the No. 2 seed at the event. The 2022 Big West Women's Water Polo Championship will be held from April 21-23 in Hawai'i.
The Matadors were idle this past week and have not played a match since April 2 at UC Davis. CSUN gave then 10th-ranked UC Davis a battle in that match but the Matadors fell just short by a 10-9 margin. The Matadors trailed 8-4 late in the third period before roaring back to tie the game twice in the fourth quarter. However, the Aggies picked up the deciding goal with two seconds remaining to secure a win. Dorottya Telek led the Matadors with a five-goal performance while Anna Pal chipped in with three goals.
With her five goals at UC Davis, Telek pushed her season goal total to a Big West-leading 72 this season. Telek also tops the Big West in points (100) while she ranks second in steals (34) and third in assists (28). Her 72 goals are the most scored by a freshman player in team history and the tally is the sixth-most ever scored in a single-season at CSUN. Telek is eight off the pace of Whitney Delgado's all-time single-season mark of 80 goals.
Anna Pal has also impressed in her debut season with the Matadors as she ranks second in the Big West in assists (34), fifth in points (75) and seventh in goals (41). Helena Sandhagen is third on the team in scoring with 23 goals to go with 12 assists while Valeria Martinez has 15 goals and 19 assists in her first season with CSUN. In net, Meghan Lopez has played in 20 matches this season, registering 180 saves with a 9.65 goals-against-average.
The Matadors and Long Beach State will play for the 36th time in water polo on Saturday with the Beach holding a 26-9 edge in the series. CSUN is 4-5 all-time against the Beach at Matador Pool but the last three meetings have been decided by four combined goals. The Beach has won five in a row in the series but the teams have not met since the 2019 season when Long Beach State won four times against CSUN. The Matadors' last win in the series took place in 2018 in a neutral-site game.
A Closer Look at Long Beach State
The 10th-ranked Beach have gone 13-13 overall and 2-3 in Big West play. In last week's action, the Beach knocked off UC Davis 9-4 before losing to Hawai'i 14-5. Long Beach State is tied with UC Davis, a team it may likely face in the conference tournament, for fourth place in the Big West standings. Oris Hertzka is ranked third in the Big West in goals with 63 while Elena Kotanchyan is sixth with 43 goals. In front of the cage, Chelsea Oliver is fifth in the conference in saves (107) and seventh in GAA (9.55).
