
CSUN Hosts Long Beach State Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN Women's Tennis team returns home Saturday when the Matadors host Long Beach State. The first serve is 11 a.m. Fans who attend will receive a t-shirt while supplies last.
The Beach brings an 8-9 overall record and a 3-4 conference mark into the week. Nikola Homolkova leads the team in singles wins with 16 (16-13). Zara Lennon and Sheena Masuda are the top doubles team as they have compiled an 11-5 record. Saturday is the 49th time CSUN and Long Beach State are playing women's tennis, with The Beach leading the all-time series 36-12.
The Matadors (7-7, 3-5 Big West) battled No. 21 USC as the Trojans defeated the Matadors 4-0 Apr. 5 at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. In doubles, Sasha Turchak and Ekaterina Repina led Grace Piper and Naomi Cheong 5-4 before play stopped due to the USC pair retiring. As a result, this gave the Matadors a point.
Eryn Cayetano and Salma Ewing defeated Jolene Coetzee and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso 6-1 at No. 1. Then, Jenna Dorian and Victoria Santibañez Luna battled Gabrielle Lee and Isabelle Lee at No. 3 doubles before the USC pair took the victory 6-4 to secure the team point for the Trojans.
Cheong ranked 78th in the current ITA poll, defeated Fraile Toboso 6-0, 6-2 to begin singles play at No. 2. Gabrielle Lee defeated Jasmine Tolmoyan 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 to earn USC's (14-10) second win. Cayetano, sixth in the current ITA rankings, defeated Repina 6-3, 6-1.
CSUN was in contention in the three remaining matches before play concluded. Turchak led 4-1 in the second set after dropping the first to Danielle Wilson 7-5. It was a similar story at No. 4, where Dorian led 2-0 in the second set when play ended. In the opening set, Dorian dropped a 7-5 decision to McKenna Koenig. Santibañez Luna also led 2-0 in the second set during the No. 5 match after losing 7-5 to Isabelle Lee in the first set.
Playing its second nationally-ranked women's tennis opponent this week, CSUN dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 24 UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at the Arnhold Tennis Center.
Marta Gonzalez and Camille Kiss defeated Repina and Turchak 6-1 at No. 2 doubles before Priscila Janikian and Amelia Honer clinched the doubles point as the Gauchos' duo defeated Dorian and Yuliia Zhytelna 6-2. UCSB's nationally ranked pair of Shaknoza Khatamova and Elizaveta Volodko (No. 83) led Coetzee and Fraile Toboso 5-4 before the doubles ended.
Camile Kiss began singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Fraile Toboso at No. 3. Next, Honer handed Turchak a 6-2, 6-0 defeat in the No. 4 singles match. Finally, Volodko clinched the overall win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2 versus Coetzee.
Khatamova, ranked 76th, was leading Repina 7-6 (7-3), 2-1 at No. 1 singles when the action ended. When play ended, Priscilla Janikian led Dorian 6-4, 3-2 at No. 5. Zhytelna led Marta GonzalezBallbe 6-4, 1-4 as the action ended.
