CSUN Defeats Long Beach State For the First Time Since 2000

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—For the first time since Mar. 23, 2000, CSUN defeated Long Beach State in a women's tennis dual as the Matadors edged The Beach 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Matador Tennis Complex. CSUN's victory broke a streak of 25 consecutive Long Beach State dual wins in the all-time series that dates to 1980 (Long Beach State now leads 36-13).
The Beach began doubles with a victory as Zara Lennon and Sheena Masuda defeated Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso and Magdalena Hedrzak 6-3. CSUN tied it up when Jenna Dorian and Victoria Santibañez Luna handed a Claire Le Du and Zuzanna Szczepanska 6-2 defeat. Nikola Homolkova and Peppi Ramstedt clinched the doubles point for Long Beach State when The Beach duo defeated Ekaterina Repina and Sasha Turchak 6-2.
Lennon opened singles by defeated Fraile Toboso 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Repina scored for CSUN at No. 1 singles when she posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Nikola Homolkova. Szczepanska put Long Beach State up 3-1 when she won in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) versus Santibañez Luna in No. 6 play.
"I'm really glad about how all of us competed today," Repina said. "The energy was amazing, and the friendships made us fight for each other. It was a great day for the Matadors, and we can't wait to make the most out of our next matches."
Hedrzak defeated Le Du 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Turchak tied the score 3-3 with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 victory in the No. 3 slot.
"Doubles started off a bit slow, but once singles started, everyone's energy was great," said Turchak. "My teammates really pumped me up and that helped keep my energy going. My match was close, and I was able to pull it out at 7-5 in the third to tie it up at three. I am so proud of Jenna for closing it out."
Dorian earned the victory for CSUN at No. 5. She won the first set 6-1 against Ramstedt. Ramstedt tied the match by winning the second set 6-1. Dorian came back to win 6-4 in the third set to take it all for the Matadors.
"I couldn't be prouder of my team," Dorian said. "Every single player who stepped out on the court as well as the team off who were cheering off the court gave 1000-percent of their effort. This was a very tough match for us, and we came together and figured it out. The energy and talent were there. That was one of the best last matches, I could have asked for. This is one of the best teams and coaches, I could ask for."
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GARY VICTOR
"Playing without Jolene and with (Victoria) only able to hold down food for the last two days, this was a true test of this team's resiliency and grit. Kat played great after a tough doubles match. Sasha, Magda, and Jenna displayed toughness at the highest level. This was a TEAM/FAMILY win. I couldn't be happier for the hard working and committed young ladies of this team."
