NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN Men's Golf team is set to open the 2022 Big West Men's Golf Championship on Sunday, May 1 in La Quinta. Nine teams will play 54 holes over three days (May 1-3) in a battle for the conference crown.
The three-day championship tournament will be contested at La Quinta Country Club. The Matadors are seeded sixth in the championship and will be paired with No. 4 seed Cal Poly and No. 5 seed Cal State Fullerton for Sunday's opening round.
Last year, CSUN finished sixth on the same La Quinta course posting a three-round score of 897. Blake Brothers was the low Matador player, tying for fourth in the 45-player field at one-under par 215. The fourth-place finish for Brothers was CSUN's best since Felix Mory won the 2017 individual title at Sandpiper GC in Santa Barbara.
Long Beach State is the defending champion after completing a wire-to-wire win at the 2021 championship. The Beach shot an even-par 288 in the final round, pushing their three day total to 858. The 2022 individual race was another wire-to-wire affair as UC Davis' Lucas Carper led throughout on his way to the top of the leaderboard. He shot 70-67-72 for a three day total of 209, becoming the fifth player in Aggie history to win the individual title.
The Big West champion earns an automatic berth in the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, and the individual medalist also earns his place in the regional field if he is not a member of the winning team.
As a team, the Matadors have a pair of team victories this season (Bill Cullum Invitational, UCSB Collegiate) as they have built some momentum heading into the championship tournament.Â
"We're definitely feeling confident coming off a win at UCSB's event," said CSUN Head Coach Jim Bracken. "La Quinta is a good golf course, but we're familiar with it having played there last year. We're back to near full-strength – with the exception of Blake - and our scoring averages are pretty solid despite playing in some tough conditions this spring. I know this team is very capable and looking forward to playing some solid golf over the next few days."
Brothers, who leads the team with a 71.07 scoring average this season, will miss the championship tournament due to injury. Felix Schrott comes into the championship with a 72.50 scoring average, followed by Eirik Thomassen (73.03), Nick Fowlkes (73.23), Paul-Louis Gachet (74.07) and Thomas Burou (76.67).
The Matadors are seeking their best conference championship finish since finishing second in 2017. Behind Mory's individual win, CSUN's 2017 finish was its best conference finish since winning the Big Sky Conference championship in 2000. The Matadors have three third place Big West Championship finishes in 2004, 2008 and again in 2011.
The Big West Conference champion and top individual automatically qualify for one of six NCAA regionals which will be held May 15-18 at various sites. The 2022 NCAA Men's Golf Championship will be held at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. on May 27-June 1.
