UC San Diego Defeats CSUN 5-1

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—UC San Diego scored four runs with two outs as the Tritons defeated CSUN 5-1 to open a Big West Conference softball series at Matador Diamond Friday afternoon.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
The Tritons took a 1-0 lead in the third when Deena Pedersen's two-out single scored Mariah Melendez. However, a two-out CSUN error in the top of the third resulted in UCSD scoring a second run.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Kennedi Sorensen walked. Then, Kaylee Escutia doubled to the left-center field gap. Pinch-runner Ariel Gomez scored from first to make it a 2-1 game.
Isabel Lavrov's two-out double in the top of the fourth plated a pair of runs to increase the advantage to 4-1 in favor of the Tritons.
Bobbi Agguire led off the UC San Diego sixth with a walk. Pinch-runner Reilly Erickson advanced to third on an Alexa Demarse double. The Matadors brought the infield in which Erickson at third when Melendez grounded out short. Sydney Freijanes fielded Kelley Renner's grounder to second. Freijanes' only play was to first, which allowed Erickson to score. Pinch-hitter Marissa Hassis grounded out to first to end the inning.
UC San Diego pitcher Jada Cecil struck out the first four Matadors she faced, retiring the first eight Matadors before issuing a two-out double to Mikayla Carman in the bottom of the third. Carman and Escutia combined for the four hits (two each) that Cecil issued. Cecil struck out six while walking only one before giving way to Shelby Thompson in the bottom of the seventh.
Thompson gave up a one-out single to Freijanes as UC San Diego outhit the Matadors 10-5. Lavrov was the top Triton as she went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Cecil is 1-of-25 finalists for the 2022 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year…Cecil is 17-4 with 211 strikeouts in 31 appearances this season…Friday was only the ninth time CSUN and UC San Diego played softball as the Tritons continued their move to Division I…The Matadors lead the all-time series 5-4.

CSUN (20-29, 10-12 Big West) and UCSD (24-24, 12-10 Big West) conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader that gets underway at 1 p.m. The Matadors will honor the senior class with a ceremonial first pitch before game one and a ceremony upon the conclusion of game two. ESPN+ will stream both games.
