CSUN & UC San Diego Split Saturday Doubleheader

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN rallied from a three-run deficit to win game one in extra innings before UC San Diego took advantage of Matador error to take the night cap as the teams split a Big West Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Matador Diamond.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
GAME 1
CSUN trailed 3-0 before rallying back and defeating UC San Diego 4-3 in eight innings in the opening game of the day.
The teams combined to leave 10 runners (six for UCSD, four for CSUN) on-base as it remained scoreless through the first four innings.
Alexis Martinez hit Morgan Eng with the first pitch of the fifth inning. Deena Pederson's sacrifice bunt advanced Eng to second. Keila Bosinger reached on an infield single as Eng took third. Bosinger stole second to keep the Tritons out of the double play. Isabel Lavrov reached for a high Martinez fastball and was able to triple to center to drive in both runners and give UCSD the lead.
Clarissa Reynoso's suicide squeeze attempt ended up in front of home plate. Kennedi Sorensen, the Matadors' catcher, attempted to tag out Lavrov who was able to slide in under the tag for the third run of the game.
UC San Diego starter Gabby Williams gave up one hit through the first four innings before Mikayla Carman singled with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Alexis Lemus followed with a single to center to push Carman to second. Jaymi Steward doubled to left to plate both runners. Pedersen, the UCSD shortstop, threw home to try and throw out Lemus, but the ball bounced away, allowing Steward to get to third. Williams walked Sorensen to give CSUN runners on the corners.
Mia Cortez pinch-ran for Sorensen as Kaylee Escutia came to the plate. Cortez attempted to get caught in a run-down to score Steward. The Tritons threw down and caught Cortez on the steal attempt for the second out. Escutia grounded out to third to end the inning. Allie Gardiner relieved Martinez to start the sixth and she recorded the first 1-2-3 inning of the day for the Matadors. Alexa Landeros opened the CSUN sixth with a single up the middle. Vinessa Nunez successfully sacrificed Landeros with a bunt. Landeros stole third before Williams struck out Sydney Freijanes.
After going down in the count 3-0, Williams struck out pinch-hitter Paloma Usquiano but Williams' pitch went to the backstop, allowing Landeros to score and Usquiano to reach first. Carman singled to left to chase Williams in favor of Kaia Simpson. Simpson walked Lemus to load the bases. Simpson fell behind in the count 3-0 to Steward before battling back to strike out the redshirt senior looking to end the inning.
Bosinger doubled with one out in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Bosinger advanced to third on a Gardiner wild pitch. Gardiner struck out Reynoso for the final out. A 1-3 CSUN double play kept the Tritons at bay in the top of the eighth.
Nunez reached on a Pederson error to start the bottom of the eighth. Simpson struck out Freijanes before Aaliyah Swan doubled down the left field line to allow Nunez to reach third. The Tritons brought the infield in with Carman at bat. Carman hit a grounder to third. Bosinger fielded the ball and threw home to retire Nunez. Lemus singled to right to drive in Swan for the game-winning run.
Lemus went 2-for-2 with three walks for the Matadors. Carman went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Gardiner improved to 7-4 on the year as she allowed two hits over three innings of relief. Bosinger and Agurrie both went 3-for-4 for the Tritons.
GAME 2
In a game in which the teams combined for only three hits, UC San Diego took advantage of four CSUN errors to defeat the Matadors 4-0 in the night cap.
CSUN starter Kenedee Jamerson retired the first 10 UCSD batters she faced before committing an error that allowed pinch-hitter, Zoe Richards, to reach first with one out in the top of the fourth. Eng reentered the game and stole second. Lavrov went up in the count 3-0 before Jamerson worked her way back to strike out the UCSD clean-up hitter to wrap up the frame.
UCSD starter Jada Cecil struck out eight of the first 12 Matadors she faced. Sorensen reached on a Lavrov error at second with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Pinch-runner Ariel Gomez stole second before Cecil struck out Escutia. Sami Garcia grounded out to third to conclude the inning.
Mariah Melendez reached on an error to begin the UCSD sixth. Kelley Renner reached on a second Matador error. Jamerson hit Pederson with a pitch to load the bases. CSUN brought the infield in against Eng who hit a grounder to Nunez at third.
Nunez came home with the throw. After being originally called out, the umpiring crew met, and overturned the call, ruling that Melendez was safe, scoring the run on an error. Bosinger singled up the middle to clear the bases and gave the Tritons a 4-0 lead.
UC San Diego worked out three walks against CSUN reliever Elise Madison in the top of the seventh. Jamerson reentered the game with one out and the bases loaded. Eng's bunt attempt was fielded by Jamerson who threw home for the second out. Bosinger grounded out to second to conclude matters. Cecil retired the Matadors in order in the seventh to pick up her 18th victory of the season (18-4).
Cecil struck out 12 as Steward recorded both Matador hits. The 5-10 freshman did not walk a batter. Jamerson allowed the lone Tritons hit. She struck out five and walked on in taking the hard-luck loss.

CSUN (21-30, 11-13 Big West) closes the 2022 regular season next weekend when the Matadors travel to UC Santa Barbara (15-35, 6-17 Big West) on May 13-14. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m., with Saturday's single game beginning at 1 p.m. ESPN+ will stream all three games.
