CSUN Hosts UC San Diego on Senior Weekend

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.--CSUN (20-28, 10-11 Big West) will host UC San Diego in the final home softball series this weekend. The Big West Conference action begins Friday with a single game at 3 p.m. and concludes Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

The Matadors will honor the Senior class, comprised of Sami Garcia, Kenedee Jamerson, Alexis Lemus, Elise Madison, Kennedi Sorensen, Jaymi Steward, and Aaliyah Swan on Saturday.

The program will also honor Journey Rojas, 2021 senior, as due to COVID-19, Rojas' senior ceremony a year ago was limited. ESPN+ will stream Saturday's doubleheader.

UC San Diego is 23-24, 11-10 in Big West play after dropping two of three last week at UC Riverside. UCSD pitcher Jada Cecil is one of 25 finalists for the 2022 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award. This season, Cecil is 16-4 in the circle with a 1.68 ERA and 205 strikeouts in 150.1 innings. She leads the league in strikeouts and opposing batting average (.169). Cecil is second in ERA,

Isabel Lavrov (.324) is the team's leading hitter. Keila Bosinger has posted a team-high seven home runs. Clarissa Reynoso's 28 RBI are a team-best. The Matadors lead the all-time series 5-3.

Coming off the program's third Big West sweep of the season, the Matadors won three games at CSU Bakersfield on Apr. 30-May 1. The Matadors defeated the Roadrunners 10-0 in Saturday's opener before closing the day with a 5-1 victory. CSUN concluded the series with a 10-1 win that went all seven innings on Sunday. Â

Sydney Freijanes was selected Big West Field Player of the Week and Big West Freshman of the Week on May 2 for her performance in Bakersfield. Freijanes tied the CSUN school record for most RBI in a game with seven as the Matador defeated CSU Bakersfield on May 1.

Freijanes' seven-RBI performance ties her with Katie Hooper (vs. Grand Canyon, 2/20/15) and Jen Moshier (vs. Penn, 3/9/06) for the school record. This season, she is 1-of-26 Division I players to tie for the 10th most RBI in a game. The Long Beach (Wilson HS) native went 6-for-7 at the plate in two games on the weekend and raised her season RBI total to 12. In addition, she raised her batting average from .136 to .212.

Kenedee Jamerson won two of the three games in the circle. She gave up one earned run in 10 innings. Alexis Martinez won the remaining game, a complete-game four-hitter during the 5-1 victory.Â
