Hot Shooting Hawai'i Gets Past CSUN 76-60

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-- The University of Hawai'i shot 71 percent in the first half as the Rainbow Wahine defeated CSUN 76-60 in Big West women's basketball action Monday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
A Hawai'i 11-0 run out of the first quarter media timeout pushed the Rainbow Wahine into a double-digit lead. UH ended the first quarter by outscoring CSUN 16-4 over the final 4:42 to lead 24-13 after 10 minutes. Hawai'i made 10 of the 13 field goal attempts in the first quarter.
CSUN chipped away, cutting the Rainbow Wahine lead to five when Tess Amundsen sank a jumper in the paint with four minutes remaining. Daejah Phillips' three-point on the ensuing Hawai'i possession keyed a 9-2 spurt that earned UH its largest lead of the half, 42-30, with 1:57 to play. CSUN responded by outscoring Hawai'i in the final half-minute to make it 44-36 at the break. The Rainbow Wahine was 7-of-11 from the field in the second and 17-of-24 for the half. CSUN kept pace in the second, making eight of 13 attempts, shooting 50% (13-of-26) for the first half.
With both teams cooling off from the field, the Matadors chopped down the lead to seven, 49-42, when Michelle Duchemin went coast-to-coast and finished the play with a layup midway through the period. Lily Wahinekapu's bucket followed McKenna Haire's three-pointer to extend the advantage into double figures. Laney Amundsen scored four of the following seven CSUN points to get the Matadors to within seven. Anaiyah Tu'ua's field goal at the third quarter buzzer created a 58-51 score after 30 minutes.
Tess Amundsen began the fourth quarter with free throws to make it 58-53. UH went back up 10 as Haire sank a long three-pointer. Tess Amundsen sank a fast break three-pointer to make it a seven-point game with 7:30 remaining. Kalin Spiller's three-point play on the following Hawai'i possession was followed by Wahinekapu making 1-of-2 free throws. Trailing 70-58, De'jah Williams hit a 15-foot jumper for a 70-60 score at 3:08. The Rainbow Wahine held CSUN scoreless over the final three minutes to win the game by 16.

"We had major defensive breakdowns tonight. I'll be glad when this stretch of five games in 10 days is over so we can get back to practice. I appreciate our kids; we play super hard, they get after it and never give up, but there it comes to a point where the button must be pushed and having that mentality about winning games and carry over to the win-loss record."

Haire led the Rainbow Wahine with 18 points, all of which came from beyond the three-point arc (6-of-8). Wahinekapu scored 16 points and dished out a game-high six assists. Phillips scored 14 points, grabbed a team-high five rebounds, and added five assists. Tess Amundsen paced the Matadors with 17 points. She added four rebounds and a steal. Jordyn Jackson scored all her 15 points in the first half.
Hawai'i ended the night shooting 57.1% (28-of-49) from the floor. The Rainbow Wahine sank 12 three-pointers in 21 attempts (57.1%). CSUN shot 39.6% (21-of-53) from the field, 8-of-27 in the second half.
The Matadors sank 14-of-17 free throw attempts (82.4%) compared to 8-of-13 (61.5%) for Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine outrebounded the Matadors 32-24, but CSUN held an 8-7 advantage on the offensive glass. CSUN made nine steals, forcing 18 UH turnovers, leading to 15 points.

Hawai'i's victory was the fourth in the all-time series in which the Rainbow Wahine lead 14-11. Jackson is now nine points away from becoming the 14th CSUN player to score at least 1,000 in her career. Tess Amundsen's 17 increases her career total to 870 between her stint at Boise State and CSUN. She has started 44 games in which she appeared in a Matadors' uniform, scoring 625 points for CSUN.
