NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—UC Santa Barbara broke open a tie game against CSUN with a 17-4 third-quarter run that led to the Gauchos defeating the Matadors 70-45 Thursday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
CSUN trailed 18-13 after one and played the Gauchos to a 13-13 second quarter to trail 31-25 at halftime. Tess Amundsen opened the second half with a steal and jumper. Ila Lane responded with a layup. Down by five, Kayanna Spriggs' second chance layup was followed by an Amundsen basket. Spriggs tied the game at the 6:23 mark when she made 1-of-2 free throws.
It was at that point that the Gauchos mounted the game-changing run. UCSB scored eight consecutive points before Amundsen made a layup. Then, Anya Choice made back-to-back layups, followed by a Jordyn Jackson jumper. Alexis Whitfield's consecutive baskets in the paint launched a 12-1 run to end the third quarter, giving UC Santa Barbara a 57-38 lead after 30 minutes. The Gauchos limited the Matadors to two field goals in the fourth, outscoring CSUN 13-7 for the final 25-point margin.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"I turned to the coaching staff, and I could feel (the UCSB) run coming). We didn't get any defensive stops. We were giving up too many second-chance opportunities, and we were giving up open too many open threes. We couldn't recover from it. We wanted to get Jordyn the two extra points to get to 1,000, but I know she would have rather won the game than get into the CSUN record books."
THE STATS
Jackson scored seven points and sits at 998 for her career. She tied her career-high with seven rebounds. In addition, Jackson tallied four assists and three steals. Amundsen was the lone Matador in double figures with 15 points. Alexis Tucker's 18 points was a UC Santa Barbara high. She added eight rebounds and three steals. Jessica Grant scored 12 points, while Whitfield recorded 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
UCSB limited CSUN to 27.4% (17-of-62) shooting as the Gauchos made 24-of-51 field goal attempts (47.1%). The Gauchos drew 19 CSUN fouls, resulting in 18-of-24 made free throws. The Matadors went to the charity stripe seven times, making five attempts. UC Santa Barbara outrebounded CSUN 44-34, but the Matadors held an 11-9 offensive rebound advantage. The Gauchos posted 15 assists and 14 turnovers. UCSB made 12 steals to force 15 CSUN turnovers. The Matadors charted 11 assists.
