FULLERTON, Calif.— Jordyn Jackson became the 14th CSUN women's basketball player to score at least 1,000 points in her career, but Cal State Fullerton edged the Matadors 70-67 Saturday night at Titan Gym.
Jackson reached the 1,000-point club at the 6:00 mark of the first quarter when she converted a steal into a layup that made the score 5-4.
Ashlee Lewis scored six of the first nine Cal State Fullerton points. Tess Amundsen matched Lewis as she scored seven of the first nine for the Matadors. Amundsen ended the first quarter by scoring 12 of the 16 CSUN points in the opening 10 minutes to push the Matadors to a three-point lead.
Leading 18-17, back-to-back threes from Jackson and Macy Smith powered CSUN to an 8-0 run and a 26-17 lead. The Titans called a timeout at 6:42 of the 2nd quarter. Cal State Fullerton went scoreless for nearly three minutes until Fujika Nimmo made 1-of-2 free throws. The Titans' scored again from the field at 4:55 on a Una Jovanovic three-pointer. Cal State Fullerton chipped away, closing to 29-26 when Gabi Vidmar sank a three-pointer. Despite CSUN scoring two field goals in the final four minutes of the first half, the Matadors led 37-32 at halftime.
The Titans mounted a 10-4 run early in the third quarter to cut the CSUN advantage to 45-43 midway through the stanza. A Jackson layup created a 47-43 game. The media timeout arrived at 3:56. Kayanna Spriggs, who scored six early points in the frame for the Matadors, made a pair of free throws out of the break to tie her career high with 11 and make it a six-point game. Smith's free throws pushed it to 51-43 in favor of CSUN on the next Matadors' possession.
Nimmo broke a three-minute scoring drought for the Titans with a step-back jumper. The teams exchanged turnovers before Ana Carolina De Jesus' layup returned the lead to eight. Demonnie Lagway's three-point play made it 53-48 at the 44-second mark. A Matadors' turnover resulted in Aixhel Hernandez's field goal at the buzzer for a 53-50 score.
The Titans opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run to take the lead for the first time since the first quarter. Trailing 57-55, Michelle Duchemin went to the free throw line, where she sank both attempts to tie the game for the fourth time. However, Nimmo returned the lead to the Titans with a fast break layup. Duchemin sank her first three-pointer of the night to get CSUN back up by one. However, the CSUN defense held, forcing a 30-second violation heading into the media time out midway through the period.
De'jah Williams' jumper out of the media increased the advantage. The teams traded zero possessions before Vidmar's putback again created a one-point game. CSUN turned the ball over, leading to Nimmo being fouled in the shooting. She made both to put the Titans up by one.
Duchemin again hit from long range for a 65-63 score. Nimmo tied it again with a fadeaway jumper at 2:20. CSUN committed a turnover the next time down, but Nimmo missed a three-pointer. CSUN got the rebound and worked the clock to 1:28 when the Titans kicked the ball. Despite a fresh 20 seconds to work with, CSUN couldn't take advantage resulting in what proved to be the game winning basket, a Laway layup. However, the Matadors failed to make a basket. The Titans got the rebound and drained the clock to 11 seconds, where Nimmo again made a fadeaway jumper for a pair of insurance points.
CSUN called a timeout to advance the ball. The Titans held the Matadors at bay, grabbing a rebound from a pair of misses. Hernandez was fouled. She converted 1-of-2 before a Jackson layup at the buzzer made it the final 70-67.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"There were a couple of critical moments that could have changed the course. Whether it was a missed shot, a missed block out, or committing a turnover late, it's the game. We know anytime it is close on the road, you must take care of business and control the things you can control."
"We got great minutes from our bigs tonight. De'jah, Ana, and Kayanna gave us some things we have been lacking. They finished at the basket, the shot extremely well, and rebounded the ball, which is a huge positive for us and builds off this game for consistency down the road."
