CSUN Visits Santa Clara on Tuesday, Hosts HIU on Saturday Afternoon

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Basketball (2-0) hits the road for the first time this season to take on Santa Clara on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. The Matadors then close the week with a home matchup with Hope International on Saturday at noon. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

ABOUT LAST WEEK
The Matadors began the 2023-24 season with a pair of victories at home last week. CSUN posted a 79-64 victory over Utah State on opening night powered by a freshman duo combining to score 36 points before the Matadors rallied from an 18-point deficit to knock off Seattle U in overtime 81-72.
Freshmen Amiyah Ferguson and Kaitlyn Elsholz scored 18 points apiece against Utah State. The Matadors would lead for most of the night, building as a big a lead as 20 points in the second quarter. Erica Adams, who also made her CSUN debut, scored 17 points while Laney Amundsen scored a career-high 10 on the night.
CSUN fell behind Seattle U 20-2 to start the game as the Redhawks led by double digits for most of the contest. The Matadors though chipped away at the lead and eventually caught Seattle U in the closing moments of the fourth quarter. In a highlight of the night, Kayanna Spriggs hit a game-tying three as time expired to send the game to overtime. Elsholz, who scored nine in the fourth, posted seven points in OT to complete the comeback win. On the night, Elsholz had a team-high 22 points while Talo Li-Uperesa had 14. Adams and Spriggs chipped in with 13 points apiece.
FIRST 2-0 START SINCE...
CSUN has opened the season with its first 2-0 start since the 2014-15 season. That CSUN team would begin the season at 6-0 en route to winning the Big West championship. The team's 2-0 start this season is only the program third over the past 24 seasons.
SUPER FRESHMEN
Through two games, the Matadors have leaned on the true freshmen duo of Kaitlyn Elsholz and Amiyah Furgeson. Elsholz is leading the team in scoring at 20.0 points per game to go 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 2.5 assists and 2.0 blocks per game. Ferguson is also scoring in double figures, averaging 11.0 points while dishing out 5.0 assists per game. Both have come off the bench but have averaged over 20 minutes per game on the floor.
TRANSFERS MAKING IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Erica Adams, a junior transfer from Pacific, has also been one of the team's top scorers on the young season. Adams is averaging 15.0 points on 48.0 percent shooting to go with 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game. A transfer from City College of San Francisco, Talo Li-Uperesa leads the squad in rebounding at 6.5 per game while averaging 10.0 points per game. Both Adams and Li-Uperesa have started both games thus far.
SCOUTING SANTA CLARA
The Broncos (2-1) opened the season with a win over San José State (55-47) before falling at California (71-56). Santa Clara did earn an impressive win on Saturday over defending Big West champion Hawai'i (62-51) at home. A season ago, Santa Clara went 15-17 overall and 6-12 in the West Coast Conference. The Broncos were picked to finish third in the WCC this season. The team is led by Tess Heal who was first-team all-conference and WCC Newcomer of the Year last year. Heal is averaging 17.0 points while Olivia Pollerd is averaging 9.0 points and 4.0 rebounds. As a team, the Broncos have allowed just 56.3 points per game. Head coach Bill Carr is in his eighth season.

SERIES HISTORY: Santa Clara leads CSUN 10-3 in the all-time series with wins in two straight. The teams met last season in Northridge with the Broncos prevailing 68-62. CSUN's last win in the series was at Santa Clara by a 53-38 score on Nov. 30, 2018.
SCOUTING HOPE INTERNATIONAL
HIU (2-2) dropped two games last week to Southern Oregon (77-55) and Oregon Tech (79-68). Last season, the Royals went 24-8 overall, winning the Golden State Athletic Conference. A member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, HIU has advanced to the NAIA Tournament in each of the past two seasons. Prior to taking on CSUN, HIU faces Westcliff on Thursday. Shiane Talley, an NAIA All-American, tops the team in scoring (20.8) and rebounding (9.8) while Shailisa Jarrett is scoring 12.0 points per game. Head coach Jessica Case is in her second season leading the team.
SERIES HISTORY: CSUN has met Hope International just once in regular season play with the Matadors claiming a 77-54 win at home on Dec. 31, 2019. Saturday's game will be considered an exhibition game for Hope International.
