SANTA CLARA, Calif.---CSUN Women's Basketball suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday night, falling at Santa Clara 71-39 at Leavey Center. Freshmen Amiyah Ferguson and Kaitlyn Elsholz scored seven points apiece to lead the Matadors.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN would be unable to overcome a slow start to the game with the Matadors missing their first 13 shots. Meanwhile, the Broncos took advantage and scored the game's first 17 points, capped by a 3-pointer from Marya Hudgins. Talo Li-Uperesa finally ended the drought with a three while CSUN went on to make its next two shots to end the first quarter, but Santa Clara held a 23-8 advantage through 10 minutes.
CSUN would battle back to within 10 points early in the second quarter after Amiyah Ferguson nailed a three then picked off a pass and scored on a driving layup.

However, Hudgins answered with a layup then Tess Heal nailed a three to push the lead to 28-13. The deficit swelled to 20 points on a layup from Georgia Grigoropoulou with 2:49 left before halftime. Ferguson would find Arina Nikishina on a nice pass through the middle of the lane but Jayde Cadee made a late three for a Santa Clara 41-20 lead at the break.
CSUN would have its best shooting quarter of the night in the third, making 5-of-13 shots but the Broncos outscored the Matadors 17-10 in the 10-minute session. In the fourth, Grigoropoulou converted on a layup to push the lead to 60-30. An 8-0 Bronco run would push the lead to the biggest of the night at 68-32. Kaitlyn Elsholz closed the Matador scoring for the night with a three.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"This is the second game in a row we have put ourselves in big hole in the first quarter. We will challenge our starters to set a better tone on the defensive side moving forward. Give Santa Clara credit, they handled our initial pressure and shot extremely well from the 3-point line tonight. I am concerned about giving up 16 offensive rebounds, and we will emphasize that during our film sessions this week."
