CSUN Hits the Road to Take on Sacramento State

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Basketball (2-3) returns from a 10-day break for a matchup at Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.

ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN dropped its third-straight game with an 84-31 loss at Minnesota on Wednesday, Nov. 22. The Matadors kept pace early before the Golden Gophers went on a 16-2 run to close the first quarter. CSUN would keep fighting throughout but suffered through its worst shooting night of the season. Meanwhile, Minnesota would extend to a 35-point lead at the break. The Matadors would only be outscored 18-14 in the third period, however, Minnesota stretched its lead further with a 16-2 fourth period to end the game.
Kayanna Spriggs nearly came away with a double-double as she finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Laney Amundsen added five points to go with a team-high two blocks. The matchup was the first time CSUN played against Minnesota in women's basketball.
SPRIGGS MANAGING THE BOARDS
Over the past four games, junior Kayanna Spriggs has posted two double figures scoring games and two double-digit rebounding games for CSUN. She enters play this week fifth in The Big West rebounds per game at 7.2. Pulling down 10 or more rebounds in two of the last three games, Spriggs previously only accomplishing the feat just once in her career. Spriggs is also fourth in the conference in steals per game (2.4) while she averages 8.6 points per game.

FRESHMEN DUO LEADING OFFENSIVELY
CSUN's true freshmen duo of Kaitlyn Elsholz and Amiyah Ferguson have led the Matadors or shared the team lead in points in four of five games this season. Ferguson has also topped the team in assists in four of five outings. Elsholz, who was previously named Big West Player of the Week on Nov. 13, is averaging 11.4 points per game to go with 3.4 rebounds per game. Ferguson is right behind Elsholz at 9.6 points per game while she has dished out 4.2 assists per game.

NEWCOMERS MAKING AN IMPRESSION
Another new face this season, junior forward Talo Li-Uperesa is second on the team in rebounding at 5.8 per game to go with averaging 7.0 points. Li-Uperesa is shooting 41.4 percent in 30.8 minutes per game. Junior guard Erica Adams has missed the last three games but previously led CSUN in scoring at 15.0 points per game in two wins. Adams is shooting 48.0 percent (12-of-25) and averaging 3.0 steals per game.Â
MATADORS ON THE BIG WEST LEADERBOARDS
CSUN remains in the top spot in The Big West in steals per game (12.0) and blocks per game (5.0) heading into the weekend. The Matadors are also first in offensive rebounds per game (14.8) while they place second in overall rebounds per game (39.4) and fourth in opponent 3-point field goal percentage (27.3).
Individually, Kayanna Spriggs is fourth in The Big West in steals per game (2.4) and fifth in rebounds per game (7.2) and blocks per game (1.4). Amiyah Ferguson is fifth in the league in assists per game (4.2) while she is ninth in assists to turnover ratio (1.0). In scoring, Kaitlyn Elsholz is 14th at 11.4 points per game and she ranks 10th in 3-point field goals made per game (1.6).
SCOUTING SACRAMENTO STATE
The Hornets are searching for their first win of the season (0-6). The team would fall to Santa Clara 70-65 on Wednesday at home. Sacramento State is 0-2 thus far against Big West teams this season, losing to Cal State Fullerton (61-51) and UC Davis (79-57). Last season's Big Sky Conference champion, Sacramento State has nine new student-athletes on its roster this season. Prior to the year, the Hornets were picked to finish ninth in the Big Sky by the league's head coaches. Freshman Summah Hanson leads the team in scoring at 15.0 per game and rebounding at 8.3 per game while Benthe Versteeg is averaging 5.3 assists. Head coach Aaron Kallhoff is in his first season leading the Hornets.

Series History: Sacramento State leads CSUN 20-17 in the all-time series. The teams squared off last season in Northridge with the Hornets coming out on top 63-61. CSUN is making its first trip to Sacramento State since Nov. 2013 when the Hornets prevailed 92-73.
