SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- CSUN Women's Basketball fell to Sacramento State, 58-48, on Saturday afternoon at The Nest. The Matadors' late 10-point run in the third quarter wasn't enough as they fell shy of the Hornets.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors (2-4) were the first on the board, leading 2-0 on a jumper by Kaitlyn Elsholz. The Hornets quickly took the lead with an 11-4 run before a 3-point shot by Talo Li-Uperesa pulled CSUN within two at 11-9. The Hornets wound up leading at the end of the first quarter by five at 14-9. The Matadors came out strong in the second quarter as a layup by Erica Adams trimmed the deficit to 14-11. Â
CSUN came into the third quarter determined as Amiyah Ferguson made a jumper to cut the Hornet lead to 31-22. After Sac State extended its lead to 16 (38-22), Ferguson made another layup, followed by a pull-up jumper by Adams, pulling CSUN within 12 at 38-26. The Hornets would lead by as many as 20 (46-26) before CSUN engineered a 12-2 run to close the quarter as the Matadors trailed 48-38 after three quarters. CSUN continued the fight into the final quarter as a layup by Kayanna Spriggs pulled the Matadors within nine at 50-41 with 6:29 remaining. ACCORDING TO COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"Having Erica back was super impactful for us, she gave us a calming presence with the ball in her hands. She was super-efficient despite having limited practice time over the last few weeks. I will not fault our effort but we need to develop a sense of urgency from the tip and not wait until we dig ourselves a big hole on the scoreboard. We knew Sac State had played a tough schedule and were battled tested, they are lot better than their record indicates. We have to get back to work on the basic fundamentals with a short week to prepare for a touch UCLA squad."
