The Matadors took the lead in the top of the first when Gizella Vargas Sandoval drove in Samantha Kwiatkowski with a one-out single. The Tigers loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning. Martinez induced a Linsey Hargis pop out to quiet the threat.
Â
CSUN increased the lead to 2-0 in the top of the second when Kennedy Gustin plated Shaylan Whatman with a one-out single. Gustin stole both second and third before being stranded in scoring position. Memphis loaded the bases again with two outs in the bottom of the frame. Martinez again got a pop out, this time from Madi Berner, to get out of the second.
Â
The Tigers saw a runner reach third in the bottom of the third but Memphis couldn't push a run home.
Â
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Memphis' Meagan Chism singled to left. Rachael Britton worked out a walk before a Martinez wild pitch allowed both runners to move up a base. Martinez battled back getting Sam Ibison to ground out to second to end the inning.
Â
Gustin led off the top of the seventh with a single. Kwiatowski followed with a single. Raegan Jackson reached on an error but was credited with two RBI as both Matadors scored on the play. Vargas Sandoval's single allowed Jackson to score. LaNya Bates singled to begin the bottom of the seventh for Memphis. Martinez responded by retiring the next three Tigers in order to secure the victory.
Â
Martinez struck out five as she recorded nine ground outs, six fly outs, and five strikeouts. Gustin and Kwiatowski each charted two hits. In addition to Jackson, Vargas Sandoval recorded two RBI. Bates was the lone Memphis player with multiple hits as she went 2-for-3.Â
