GAME 1
The Matadors lost in extras for the third time in four games as Notre Dame defeated CSUN 5-4 in eight innings.
A two-out Notre Dame error in the top of the second allowed Breli Agbayani Shibao to score the game's first run for the Matadors. CSUN threatened, but the Matadors left the bases loaded in the second and third innings.
Making her first start, freshman Isabella Alonso retired six in a row at one point. She pitched out of trouble in the third and fourth innings. The first two Fighting Irish batters singled in the bottom of the fifth. A CSUN error led to Carlli Kloss' two-RBI double that put Notre Dame ahead 2-1. Payton Tidd, the Fighting Irish pitcher, added a two-RBI double later in the inning to increase the lead to 4-1.
Carys Murakami walked to begin the CSUN seventh. Kennedy Gustin followed with an infield single. Jordan Kaeka, a senior, tied the game with her first career home, a three-run blast to left. With two outs, Shaylan Whatman singled to left. Gizella Vargas Sandoval reached on an error before pinch-hitter Macy Mohrlock walked to load the bases. Notre Dame reliever Shannon. Becker got Sydney Freijanes to ground out to end the inning.
The Fighting Irish threatened in the bottom of the frame. Macie Eck reached on an infield single with two outs and advanced to second on a CSUN error. Lexi Orozco worked out a walk against the third Matador pitcher of the game, Allie Gardiner. Gardiner bounced back by getting Joley Mitchell to ground out to send the game to extra innings.
Freijanes was placed at second under the international tiebreaker. Bella Mejia entered as a pinch runner. With one out, she advanced to third on an Eck wild pitch. Gustin hit a grounder to third, where Mitchell tagged out Mejia. Kaeka flew out to keep the score knotted at four.
Mitchell was placed at second to begin the bottom of the eighth. Rachel Allen singled through the left side to drive in Mitchell for the game winning run.
Mia Cortez went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Matadors. Allen and Kloss both had two hits for the Fighting Irish.
GAME 2
A four-run CSUN fourth inning broke a 2-2 tie as the Matadors defeated Northern Illinois 8-2 in the nightcap.
Mikayla Carman gave the Matadors a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when she doubled in Murakami. However, a CSUN error led to the Huskies scoring the tying run in the top of the third when Ally Rodriguez's sac fly plated Courtney James.
Samantha Kwiatkowski's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third scored Gustin to return the lead to the Matadors 2-1. Sam Mallinder opened the Northern Illinois fourth with a triple and scored on Danielle Stewart's one-out single.
Alexa Landeros led off the Matadors' fourth by homering to left field off NIU reliever Delaney Ostrowski. Then, Whatman and Vinessa Nunez recorded consecutive doubles, resulting in the Matadors increasing the lead to 4-2. Ostrowski was pulled in favor of Lilly Cassell. Murakami singled to give CSUN runners on the corners with one out. Gustin hit a grounder to Cara Cruthers at short. Cruthers came home to throw out Nunez at the plate.
A Cassell wild pitch allowed Murakami and Gustin to move up a base. Carman walked to load the bases. Kwiatkowski popped up to Cassell in the circle for the final out.
Maddie Padilla's single began the Matadors' fifth. Agbayani Shibao pinch-ran for Padilla. She reached second on a Landeros' grounder that Mallinder booted. Vargas Sandoval laid down a successful sacrifice bunt, allowing both runners to move up a base. Whatman's single drove in both runners to put the Matadors up 6-2.
Nunez walked to chase Cassell in favor of Emily Dato. Murakami flew out to right, which allowed Whatman to advance. Pinch-hitter Kaylee Escutia doubled in Whatman and Nunez to extend the lead to six.
Alexis Martinez started and went the first four innings for the win before giving way to Alonso, who pitched the final three to be awarded the save. The duo combined on a four-hitter and five strikeouts. Whatman led a nine-hit CSUN attack by going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
