CSUN Wins a Pair on Day 1 of CBU Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—CSUN picked up a pair of victories on Friday on day one of the CBU Classic.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
GAME 1
The Matadors defeated Colorado State 6-2 to begin the day.
CSUN opened the top of the second with back-to-back walks. A successful Mia Cortez sacrifice bunt put Kaylee Escutia and Shaylan Whatman in scoring position. Sydney Freijanes' ground out to second scored Escutia to give CSUN a 1-0 lead. The Rams threatened in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Hailey Smith tripled. However, CSUN starter Alexis Martinez struck out Maya Matsubara to quiet the threat.
Freijanes reached on an error to lead off the top of the fifth. Carys Murakami walked advancing pinch-runner Breli Agbayani Shibao to second. Samantha Kwiatkowski reached on a fielder's choice to short, which retired Murakami but allowed Agbayani Shibao to reach third. Mikayla Carman grounded out to short, which scored Agbayani Shibao. Maddie Padilla singled to center to drive in Kwiatkowski for a 3-0 score. The Rams got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Molly Gates' sacrifice fly plated Emma Simonich.
Escutia walked to lead off the top of the sixth. Whatman's sac bunt allowed pinch-runner Kennedy Gustin to move to second. Pinch-hitter Gizella Vargas Sandoval's infield single gave CSUN runners on the corners. Freijanes earned an RBI as she reached on an error that allowed Gustin to score. Mia Cortez went to second on the play. Murakami walked to load the bases. Kwiatkowski's sac fly drove in Cortez to make it 5-1. Alexa Landeros tripled with one out in the top of the seventh and came around to score on a Gustin single to increase the lead to 6-1.
Matsubara led off the bottom of the seventh by singling off Matadors' reliever Allie Gardiner. Gardiner struck out Sydney Hornbuckle. Kaitlyn Cook fouled out to third before Brooke Bohlender singled through the left side. Gates singled up the middle to load the bases. Ashley York singled to right center to drive in Matsubara and keep the bases loaded. Peyton Allen worked the count to 3-2 before flying out to end the game.
CSU outhit CSUN 8-5, but the Matadors worked out seven walks off Hornbuckle.
GAME 2
Freshman Isabella Alonso tossed a complete game three-hitter as the Matadors shut out Pacific 3-0 in the nightcap.
With one out in the bottom of the second, Padilla walked. Tigers' starter Amiyah Aponte hit Whatman before hitting Jordan Kaeka to load the bases. Vinessa Nunez was the third consecutive Matador to be hit by a pitch, scoring Padilla. Vanessa Strong relieved Aponte and got the final two outs of the inning to keep the score 1-0.
Alonso retired the first 10 Pacific batters she faced before issuing a Talissa Montez single with one out in the fourth inning. After getting the second out, Alonso allowed a Nina Davis single. Alonso got an Allie Capellio 1-6-3 ground out to end the inning. Jordan Hayes worked out a two-out walk for Pacific in the top of the fifth. Alonso induced An Asia Lee flyout to wrap up the frame.
Gustin began the bottom of the fifth by recording the first CSUN hit, an infield single, and reached second on a Tigers' error. She advanced to third when Carman successfully sacrificed her up a base. Pacific catcher Reagan Hamilton tried to pick Gustin off third, but the throw went into left field, allowing Gustin to score the second CSUN run.
Carly Luchetti led off the Pacific sixth with a single. Montez flew out before Luchetti stole second. Alonso struck out Rian Diermeyer. Davis popped up to short to complete the frame. Kakea doubled with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Kwiatkowski pinch-ran for Kaeka and moved to third on a two-out Murakami single. Escutia, pinch-hitting for Gustin, singled in Kwiatkowski for a three-run CSUN advantage.
Alonso retired the Tigers to complete the shutout. The Long Beach Poly High School struck out four and walked one. Alonso needed 91 pitches for the win, 59 of which were strikes.
UP NEXT
CSUN (4-3) faces the host, California Baptist, on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the final game of pool play. The semifinals will be played beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
