SCHEDULE UPDATE: CSUN Takes on Pepperdine on Sunday and Monday

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball returns to action in a home-and-home series with Pepperdine. The teams face off on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Matador Field before playing again at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu on Monday at noon. Ghizal Hasan has the call in an audio broadcast at GoMatadors.com/Radio for Sunday's game.
CSUN AND PEPPERDINE SCHEDULE SERIES AFTER RAINOUTS
Due to inclement weather, CSUN canceled its series with the University of San Francisco, which was set to begin on Friday at Matador Field. The weather also forced Pepperdine to cancel its home series with No. 20 Alabama. With the addition of this weekend's games, CSUN is scheduled to play Pepperdine five times this season with midweek games also scheduled for March 14 at Pepperdine and March 21 and May 9 at CSUN.
LAST TIME OUT
CSUN improved to 4-0 on the season with a midweek win at San Diego State, 7-5, on Tuesday. The Matadors scored six times over the first two innings including four runs on one hit in the first inning. The Aztecs would battle back to within 6-4 but Jakob Simons hit a towering home run in the sixth inning to stretch the lead to three. Isaac Ontiveros pitched the last four innings out of the bullpen, allowing an unearned run, for his first career save.
Emanuel Dean and Joey Kramer each had two RBI apiece in the win while Simons went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Right-handed pitcher Kenji Pallares tossed five innings, surrendering four runs, to earn his first win as a Matador in his debut with the program. Ontiveros struck out five and scattered two hits in his relief appearance.
MATADOR HEADLINES
A number of Matador offensive players are off to hot starts this season. Outfielder Jakob Simons is batting .471 with eight runs, eight hits, six RBI, two homers, one double and one triple. Catcher Graysen Tarlow tops the team with nine RBI to go with six runs, one homer and a .467 batting average. Second baseman Shunsuke Sakaino is also hitting above .400 mark with a .429 average while drawing four walks and collecting three RBI. In his first season at CSUN, Emanuel Dean has five doubles and five RBI in four games with a .400 batting average.
On the pitching side, CSUN's bullpen has been the story of the young season. Seven Matador pitchers have combined to toss 13 innings without an unearned run scoring. Tuesday's game was the first game where a run was scored against the CSUN 'pen, albeit an unearned run. Ontiveros has worked five innings for the Matadors this season while Xavier Martinez has tossed three clean frames.
Eddie Cornejo is the fourth Matador head coach in team history to at start 4-0 to begin a tenure as coach. Dave Serrano has the program record for most wins to start a career with a 7-0 start in 2020. Mike Batesole went 5-0 in his first season in 1996 while Bill Kernen went 4-0 in 1989.
SERIES HISTORY
Pepperdine holds a 47-44-2 edge over CSUN in the all-time series, which dates back to the 1962 season. The Waves won the last meeting between the two teams in 2019 by a 9-5 decision at home. Pepperdine has won four of the last six meetings at Matador Field while CSUN has won five of the last seven games at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The teams last played a three-game series in 2018 with Pepperdine claiming a pair of wins.
SCOUTING PEPPERDINE
The Waves (1-3) dropped a midweek contest at No. 13 UCLA, 11-2, this past Tuesday. Pepperdine's season-opening series was a three-game set with Boston College with the Waves coming out on top in the opener. Last season, the Waves went 24-26 overall and 12-15 in West Coast Conference play. Pepperdine was picked to finish sixth in the WCC this season by the league's head coaches. Rick Hirtensteiner is in his eighth season as head coach of the program.Â
Ryan Johnson tops the team with a .467 batting average to go with two homers and three RBi. Jack Basseer is also off to a strong start, hitting .455. John Peck, a Preseason All-WCC selection, tops the team with four RBI. Pepperdine's projected game one starter Shane Telfer did not allow a run in six innings of work against Boston College last week.
