3/18/2023 5:54:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—CSUN and Cal Poly exchanged shutouts as the teams split the opening Big West softball doubleheader Saturday at Bob Janssen Field.
GAME 1
Isabella Alonso tossed a complete game one-hitter as the Matadors defeated the Mustangs 5-0 in the opener.
Alonso faced the minimum through the first three innings before issuing a Jessica Clements single to lead off the bottom of the fourth. However, she quickly retired the Mustangs to get out of the inning. The freshman righty retired the final 11 Mustangs in a row to improve to 4-1 on the year. She faced 22 batters, needing only 64 pitches (40 for strikes) to record her third shutout of the season. Alonso got nine fly and eight ground ball outs in the game as she struck out one.
Alexis Garcia opened the CSUN scoring in the top of the second when she singled in Shaylan Whatman with one out. Maiya Alemania led off the fourth with a triple. With one out, pinch-hitter Maddie Padilla's sacrifice fly plated Alemida for a 2-0 score.
Alemania opened the sixth with a walk. A pitch hit Whatman. With one out, Raegan Jackson, who made a diving catch in right to end the Cal Poly fifth, hit her second home run of the season to put CSUN up 5-0.
Kaylee Escutia was 2-of-4 to lead the seven-hit attack.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Isabella set the tempo from the first pitch of the game. Then, Raegan stepped up big with her three-run home run and gave us a chance to close the door."
GAME 2
Cal Poly scored in the bottom of the first and made it stand up as the Mustangs defeated the Matadors 1-0 to earn the split on the day.
Juju Sargent, the second batter of the inning, doubled in Jessica Clements to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs loaded the bases later in the inning to bring up Kiara Blanchard with two outs. However, Blanchard grounded out back to Alexis Martinez in the circle to keep it a one-run game.
Alemania led off the second with a walk and made it to second on a Whatman grounder up the middle. With one out, Padilla pinch-hit for Garcia. She reached base as the ball went through the middle. Alemania was thrown out at home by Clements, the centerfielder who scooped up the ball on the play. A Robbins pitch hit Jackson to load the bases. Sydney Freijanes grounded out to third to end the threat.
Whatman led off the fourth with a double, but she was retired at third on a 1-5 fielder's choice at third off a Kylie Galindo grounder. Garcia worked out a walk to give CSUN runners at first and second. Robbins struck out Jackson before getting pinch-hitter Gizella Vargas Sandoval to ground out to quiet the Matadors.
The Mustangs recorded back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the fourth. Kiara Blanchard's sac advanced both runners up a base. Pinch-hitter Claire Early lined out to Whatman at third. Xiara Diaz grounded out to Whatman at third to wrap up the inning.
With one out in the top of the sixth, Robbins hit Whatman with a pitch. Kennedy Gustin pinch-ran for Whatman and made it to second on a Kaeka single. Garcia grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice for the second out. Blanchard grabbed Jackson's shot to left at the warning track to keep it 1-0.
Carys Murakami walked (her 20th of the season) with one out in the top of the seventh. Mikayla Carman popped out to center on a 3-2 Robbins pitch for out number two. Robbins struck out Escutia looking for the final out of the game.
Robbins limited CSUN to four hits. She struck out four and walked three. Sargent went 2-for-3 for the Mustangs. Martinez and Allie Gardiner combined on a four-hitter for the Matadors.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"We didn't fight or make any adjustments in game two. Shaylan made some great plays at third, and Alexis and Allie gave us a chance to win the game. We must come out stronger from Sunday's first pitch and make better offensive adjustments. We still have a chance to take the series and must come out from the first to the last pitch tomorrow."

CSUN (9-13, 1-1 Big West) and Cal Poly (8-9, 1-1 Big West) conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
