NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 22 CSUN Water Polo (16-12, 0-6 Big West) kept pace with No. 18 UC San Diego (11-16, 3-3 Big West) in the middle quarters but the Tritons pulled away down the stretch for a 15-8 win on Saturday at Matador Pool. The trio of Dorottya Telek, Helena Sandhagen and Nicole Thomas scored two goals apiece while Meghan Lopez finished with 14 saves on the day.
The Tritons came out fast, scoring on their first two possessions to pull ahead 2-0 in the opening minute of play. Valeria Martinez would put the Matadors on the scoreboard but the Tritons answered right back on a power play goal from Lucia Doak. After Sandhagen found the net to pull CSUN to within two, the Tritons ended the quarter with two more tallies to stake to a 5-2 lead.
UCSD would put CSUN into a 6-2 hole early in the second period but the Matadors battled back with two-straight scores. Telek drew a five-meter penalty near the five-minute mark before hitting the back of the net. Moments later, Sandhagen netted her second tally of the day to pull the Matadors to within 6-4. The Tritons though had an answer as Caroline Christl connected on back-to-back goals. The first half would end with a late strike from Telek that trimmed UC San Diego's lead to 8-5.
Thomas powered CSUN's offense in the third period with two goals but the Matadors could not make a dent into the Triton lead. After an early strike from Maja Layden, the tandem of Annika Arroyo and Courtney Okumura scored as well for an UCSD 11-7 advantage.
In the fourth quarter, the Tritons took control of the match, scoring four times, two of which on power plays along with a five-meter penalty. The Matadors were held without a goal in the final period until Shelby Hovanesian hit the net with one second remaining.
GAME NOTES
Telek's two goals brought her season goal tally to 97. She has now registered 23 multiple-scoring performances on the year.
Tatum Scarry finished with three assists in the contest while Hovanesian had two helpers. Anna Pal registered three steals to go with a field block.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Hats off to a conference team ranked ahead of us. They forced us to have 20-plus turnovers which is not a formula for success. We'll take this week and get as healthy as possible heading into the final Big West competition of the season."
UP NEXT
CSUN concludes the regular season with a conference matchup with Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Aprill 22 at noon. The Matadors will honor Lacey Hall prior to the match in a Senior Day ceremony.
