CSUN Falls in Game 1 at UCR; Game 2 Suspended After 15 Innings

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—CSUN and UC Riverside completed one game. However, a second extra-inning contest was suspended due to darkness Saturday afternoon in Big West softball action at Amy S. Harrison Field.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
GAME 1
A three-run rally with one out in the bottom of the fourth sent UC Riverside past CSUN 3-0 in the opener.
Lauryn Carranco retired nine in a row before hitting Maryssa Burk with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Kat Montuya followed with a single to center. Jackie Alday reached on an infield single. CSUN committed an error on the play that allowed Burk to come around from second and score as both runners moved up a base. Gigi Araki tripled to the right-centerfield gap to drive in two runs.
Briza Blanco reached on an infield single, but Araki remained at third. Rebeca Cabezas popped out, attempting a bunt for the second out. Carranco struck out Taylor Burdette to end the inning.
Nadia Witt singled to left center with one out in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Montuya doubled down the left field line. Allie Gardiner entered at the start of the inning in relief and struck out Leah Brito to wrap up the frame.
Shaylan Whatman doubled down the left field line with one out in the top of the sixth. Pinch-hitter Gizella Vargas Sandoval grounded out to third, allowing Whatman to move up a base. Mikayla Carman flew out to right to end the inning.
Maddie Heinlin tossed a two-hitter for the Highlanders. She struck out five and did not walk a batter. Araki recorded two of the three hits for UCR. Carranco struck out six in four innings before Gardiner fanned four in the final two. The 10 strikeouts are the most by a CSUN pitcher/pitching staff in a game this season.
GAME 2
In the longest game in Division I this season, CSUN and UC Riverside were tied 2-2 after 15 innings of play before play was suspended due to darkness as the teams headed into the top of the 16th. The 16th inning will begin at 1 p.m., with the series' final game beginning 30 minutes after the conclusion of the second game.
Two other Division I games that went 14 innings were the previous high. Game two is the longest for the Matadors since 2001, when CSUN and Long Beach State played 17 innings.
With runners on first and second and no outs in the bottom of the first, Burk hit a grounder to a diving Sydney Freijanes at short. From her stomach, she threw to third to get the lead runner. Freijanes jumped to grab a Montuya liner for the second out. Brito's opposite-field single to right drove in the first UCR run. Alday walked to load the bases. Isabella Alonso relieved Alexis Martinez to face Araki. Araki grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice to keep the score 1-0.
A Brooke Perez pitch hit Vargas Sandoval to begin the second. She advanced to second on a Mia Stankiewicz sacrifice bunt. Perez got Freijanes to ground out to short for the second out. Vinessa Nunez singled to right, and Vargas Sandoval attempted to score, but she was thrown out at the plate by Burdette.
Whatman walked to lead off the top of the third. Bella Mejia slapped a Perez pitch through the unguarded left side of the infield for her second hit as Whatman took second. Carman grounded out to first, which allowed both runners to move up a base. Galindo singled through the right side to plate Whatman and gave CSUN runners on the corners. Kaylee Escutia's single to left drove in Mejia for a 2-1 Matadors' lead.
The bottom of the fourth began with a Brito single down the right field line. Araki's one-out double to the right-centerfield gap scored Brito to tie the game. Gabezas successfully sacrificed Araki to third. Burdette flew out for the final out.
Whatman walked to begin the top of the fifth. Blanco relieved Perez. She started her stint against Mejia, who put down a sac bunt to allow Whatman to reach second. Carman grounded out to second as Whatman reached third. Galindo grounded out to second to end the frame.

Montuya battled back from being down 0-2 in the count to record a lead off walk to begin the bottom of the sixth. With the hit and run on, Brito's liner was caught by Freijanes at short, who threw onto first for the double play. Alday's liner to left was caught on the run by Carman in foul territory to send the Matadors to the top of the seventh.
Alexis Galvan entered the circle for UCR to begin the seventh. Despite giving up a one-out single to Nunez, she recorded three strikeouts for the Highlanders.
Araki led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to left. Cabezas' sacrifice bunt advanced Araki into scoring position at second. Carman tracked Burdette's shot to left at the warning track, but Araki didn't tag and remained at second. Alonso struck out Garewal on three pitches to send the Matadors to extra innings for the fifth time this season.
UC Riverside left a runner in the eighth, while CSUN stranded Freijanes in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Samiva Jones walked with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Burdette singled to center. Gardiner relieved Alonso. With the count 1-0, Garewal's popped out to center.
Both teams were retired in order in the 10th. Heinlin entered at the start of the 11th. She pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Alday singled to left center with one out in the bottom of the 11th. Araki popped out to short. Cabezas singled to right. Burdette worked the count to 2-2 before fouling out to short to keep the game moving.
Carman singled with two outs in the top of the 13th, but Heinlin responded by getting Galindo to ground out to third. Vargas Sandoval singled with one out in the top of the 14. Heinlin quieted the Matadors by getting the next two outs in short order.

Through 15 innings, Mejia was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt. Carman and Nunez both posted two hits. Alonso scattered five hits in a season-high eight innings of work. Gardiner has allowed four hits in 6.1 innings.
Through 15 innings, the four UC Riverside pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts, with Henlin accounting for six in 4.1 innings. Brito, Araki, and Cabezas each have two hits.
