NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Freshman Riley Wickum tossed a complete game two-hitter, striking out eight LMU batters as the Matadors shutout the Lions 4-0 Monday afternoon at Matador Diamond.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
Wickum struck out the side in the top of the first before the Lions threatened in the second. LMU worked out a pair of walks combined with a CSUN error loaded the bases with no outs. Wickum battled back, getting Arianna Jaurequi to pop out to second for the first out. An Avery Francis followed Gabby Villa's infield fly to third line out to center to end the inning.
Gizella Vargas Sandoval walked with one out in the bottom of the second before Jordan Kaeka smacked her second home run of the season to put the Matadors into the lead. Amanda Ta'amu recorded the first Lions' hit, a single with one out in the third. Wickum hit Morgan DeBord to put the tying run on first. Wickum quieted LMU as she charted back-to-back strikeouts to complete the frame.
The Matadors scored a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mikayla Carman walked with one out and scored on a Shaylan Whatman double. Maddie Padilla followed with a double that plated Whatman.
Jasmine Sofowora doubled with one out in the top of the sixth for the Lions. Jaurequi flew out before Madison Adkins grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice to end the inning. Wickum tallied her final two strikeouts as she retired LMU in order in the seventh to register CSUN's fifth shutout victory of the season.
Wickum needed 117 pitches, 72 for strikes to record her first complete game of the year. Her eight strikeouts are the most by a CSUN pitcher this season. She walked two. Whatman tallied two of the six CSUN hits and scored a run. Due to weather delays, Monday was LMU's first game since Mar. 18. The Lions are 13-15.
