#22 CSUN Faces #6 UC Irvine on the Road on Friday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 22 CSUN Water Polo wraps up the road portion of its schedule on Friday afternoon with a Big West matchup with No. 6 UC Irvine at noon. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
The Matadors (16-10, 0-4 Big West) played 10th-ranked UC Santa Barbara in an overtime thriller last Saturday with the Gauchos pulling out a 13-12 win in a sudden victory period.
CSUN led for a majority of the match and took a 9-6 lead to the fourth period before UCSB stormed in front in the final seconds of regulation. The Matadors though evened the match with five seconds remaining on a goal from Anna Pal. In overtime, Tatum Scarry gave CSUN a 12-11 lead, however, the Gauchos found the equalizer with 1:35 on the clock to help send the match to a sudden victory overtime period. The Matadors were whistled for a late exclusion with just 15 seconds on the game clock before the Gauchos' Annie Kuester scored the game-winning goal.
Scarry and Dorottya Telek each netted four goals in the contest while Anna Pal added three tallies. Meghan Lopez recorded 18 total saves in over 41 minutes in front of the cage.
MATADOR HEADLINES
With four more tallies last week, Dorottya Telek continues to inch closer to the century mark for goals. Telek stands at a Big West-leading 92 goals this season, 26 goals ahead of second place Bia Mantellato Dias of Hawai'i. She also leads the conference in points with 102 and ranked second in steals with 39. In CSUN history, Telek is tied with Jenny Jamison (2011-14) for the seventh-most career goals scored with 169. With eight more goals, Telek would catch Chari Christopher (2003-05) for sixth place on the school's career goals list.
Anna Pal holds The Big West lead in assists with 37 this season to go with 28 goals and 32 steals. Shelby Hovanesian is second on the team in goals with 30 while she has 25 steals and 21 assists on the campaign.
In front of the cage, Meghan Lopez is first in The Big West in saves with 242 this season. Lopez has seen over 700 minutes in net, posting an 8.44 goals-against-average.
HOME ON THE HORIZON
After playing the past four matches on the road, Friday's game at UC Irvine will be the Matadors' final road contest of the regular season. CSUN plays its final two matches of the regular year at Matador Pool starting on Saturday, April 15 against UC San Diego. The Matadors also host Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, April 22 in the final tuneup before the 2023 Big West Championship, which kicks off April 28 at UC Santa Barbara.
SERIES HISTORY
UC Irvine leads CSUN 33-4 in the all-time series, which dates back to the 2002 season. The Anteaters have posted 21 consecutive wins in the series including a pair of wins last season. The teams squared off at last season's Big West Championship with the UCI edging CSUN by a 13-9 margin. The last Matador win in the series took place on April 2, 2010, in an 11-9 win in overtime.
A CLOSER LOOK AT UC IRVINE
The sixth-ranked Anteaters (14-6) improved to 4-0 in Big West play with a 7-5 win over UC Davis last Friday. UCI has won six in a row and eight of its last nine matches. Five of the team's six losses this season have come to top-10 teams. Nioka Thomas sports a team-high 40 goals on the season followed closely by Elena Flynn with 38 goals. Jessica Lynch tops the team with 18 assists to go with 20 goals. Erin Tharp has spent the most time in front of the cage with 222 minutes played while she has posted a 9.37 GAA and 52 saves.
