4/7/2023 2:04:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
IRVINE, Calif.---No. 22 CSUN Water Polo (16-11, 0-5 Big West) kept pace with No. 6 UC Irvine through two quarters but the Anteaters (15-6, 5-0 Big West) pulled away down the stretch for a 19-8 win on Friday at Anteater Aquatics Complex. Dorottya Telek finished with three goals and six field blocks while Helena Sandhagen scored twice. Meghan Lopez posted 11 saves in front of the cage.
CSUN jumped on UC Irvine at the outset of the game with consecutive goals from Tatum Scarry and Telek for a 2-0 lead. The Matadors held the sixth-ranked Anteaters to a single tally in the first period while a penalty shot goal from Telek gave CSUN a 3-1 lead through eight minutes.
The Anteaters stormed back in the second quarter, scoring five of the first six goals to stake to a 6-4 lead. CSUN received an early second quarter goal from Sandhagen but were held off the scoreboard for the five-plus minutes. Telek gave the Matadors a much needed strike late in the first half on a backhanded goal in traffic to pull CSUN to within 6-5.
Out of the intermission, UCI found its groove on the offensive end as Kili Skibby, Nioka Thomas and Gracie Helberg all hit the net to stretch the lead to four. CSUN though continued to battle back behind a goal from Shelby Hovanesian then a tally from Tatiana Smeltzer to close the gap to 9-7.
UCI began to pull away with a pair of late third quarter goals to build a 11-7 lead. Sandhagen's goal on a power play with 1:15 left in the third quarter would be the Matadors' final tally of the match. On the flip side, the Anteaters scored twice in the final minute of the third period before outscoring the Matadors 6-0 in the final quarter for a double-digit victory.
GAME NOTES
With three more goals on Friday, Dorottya Telek has now scored 95 times on the season. Telek's hat trick moved her into sole possession of seventh place on CSUN's all-time career goal scoring list at 172.Â
Shelby Hovanesian totaled a team-high three assists to go with her goal.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"We continue to show improvement. Trailing 6-5 at halftime against a team ranked in the top-eight was a great showing. Unfortunatley, the second half didn't go our way. The Big West schedule is the gauntlet of women's college water polo and I'm proud of the way we competed today."
UP NEXT
CSUN returns home next Saturday, April 15 to take on UC San Diego in a Big West match starting at noon.
