5/6/2023 5:27:00 PM | Baseball
LA JOLLA, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (26-14, 12-8 Big West) picked up a strong start from Thomas Bainton and scored six early runs en route to a 10-1 win over UC San Diego (27-17, 15-8 Big West) on Saturday afternoon at Triton Ballpark. Bainton worked into the eighth inning, allowing one unearned run on four hits to go with seven strikeouts. Ali Camarillo finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored while Brandon Leon, Nathan Barraza and Kevin Fitzer had two-hit efforts.
After falling in back-to-back games in 11 innings, the Matadors received a quality start from Bainton and 12 total hits to even the weekend series with the Tritons.
Bainton's only blemish on the afternoon came in the bottom of the second when the Tritons took advantage of a passed ball and collected an RBI single from Noah Sudyka. After giving up three hits through the first two frames, Bainton would limit UCSD to just one hit over the next five-plus innings.
The Matadors meanwhile responded with a big third inning as 10 hitters came to the plate. Leon began the rally with a one-out double then Graysen Tarlow followed with a walk. Camarillo evened the game up with an RBI single before Fitzer put CSUN in front with an RBI single of his own. After another run scored on a Barraza grounder, Jakob Simons delivered a two-run double down the left-field line. Mason Le capped off a six-run third inning with an RBI single.
CSUN added to its lead in the fifth inning when Barraza collected a two-out RBI double to plate Camarillo. Leon would make it an 8-1 game in the top of the sixth on a two-out solo home run to right field.
The lead was more than enough for Bainton who scattered a pair of walks through the third and fourth innings before tossing a shutout fifth. Bainton struck out the side in the sixth inning before retiring the side in order in the seventh inning.
Bainton was lifted with one out in the the eighth and a runner on base. The combination of Hayden Cody and Isaac Ontiveros recorded the final five outs of the game.
The Matadors picked up two more runs in the top of the ninth to reach double digits in the run column. Camarillo brought home Leon with an RBI double while Luc Stuka closed the scoring with an RBI groundout to score Tarlow.
GAME NOTES
On Saturday, CSUN clinched its fourth consecutive winning season for the first time in its Division I history. The team had previously had three consecutive winning campaigns from 1991-93 and 1996-98. Going back to its Division II era (prior to 1991), CSUN had five-straight winning years from 1989 to 1993.
Thomas Bainton improved to 6-1 on the season with his performance on Saturday. Bainton has thrown four quality starts over his last five outings.
Ali Camarillo extended his hit streak to 10 games with his three-hit output. Jakob Simons also notched his team-best 12 multiple-RBI performance. Brandon Leon's home run was his second of the season.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"Thomas pounded the zone and kept great tempo throughout the game regardless of the situation. His strike ratio kept improving the more he pitched. Offensively, we got runners on base early and kept putting the ball in play. Brandon Leon gave us a spark and Shun [Sakaino] played very well on defense.
Overall, a good response to the outcome from yesterday's game."
