LOS ANGELES, Calif.---A penalty kick in the 89th minute of play would be the difference in CSUN's 1-0 loss to LMU on Thursday night at Sullivan Field. Hayden Mauldin had three saves in 90 minutes of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN came away with a near goal in the eighth minute of action via a corner kick. Paige Califf headed a shot attempt on target of the goal but goalkeeper JJ Hoover made a two-handed save. Hayden Mauldin would make all three of her saves on the night in the first period, helping keep the match scoreless. LMU nearly struck first in the 19th minute as Megan Rucker kicked a shot off the crossbar. The ball then bounced back into play but not over the goal line as Mauldin pounced on the ball to prevent any damage.
The scoreless battle continued into the second half. CSUN's Yoshi Rubalcave directed a shot into the left corner of the goal in the 53rd minute but Hoover would get a hand on the ball to make the save. LMU's Jai Smith almost hit the net on a short range shot in front of the goal that went high. CSUN also picked up shots from Rubalcava and Izabel Reyes later in the period but Hoover stopped both of those attempts as well. The game though would be decided with 1:03 remaining in the contest. CSUN was whistled for a critical foul inside its own box. LMU was awarded with a penalty kick with Alice Santen scoring the go-ahead goal. Mauldin nearly stopped the penalty kick but her deflection was not enough to complete the save.
NOTES OF THE GAME
"Credit to LMU for competing in a hard battle until the end. They scored and were the much deserving team of the result. I thought our team did well to execute the game plan but were slow again to adapt and identify new pictures that the game presents. This one was extremely emotional but a very good lesson if we want to go where we have never been, and we have to be willing to do what we have never done. It's disappointing to not get the result but I think there is a good opportunity in dissecting the process to potentially pivot on the current path that we are on.
We are a team above all else, so we lost together and there was not one player or coaching staff member to point the finger at. We all need to do our part to be better and do better as a collective unit. Despite dropping this match, I would like to highlight the consistent, tough and impactful play from Brooke Mobeck. She was solid and really allowed us to attach and defend for 89 minutes. She was a light tonight and I'd like to acknowledge her as the player of the game."
