NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (0-3-1) dropped a 2-0 battle to Pepperdine on Sunday evening at Matador Soccer Field. The Waves scored both of their goals in the second half while CSUN's Hayden Mauldin racked up five saves in the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Pepperdine would put the ball into the net in the opening minute of play but an offside call wiped away the goal. After withstanding a pair of corner kicks, Paige Califf put the Matadors' first shot on goal in the 15th minute. Ashley Cruz would nearly find the net moments later on a drive up the right wing where her shot was stopped by goalkeeper Taylor Rath at the near post. CSUN kept pace with the Pepperdine on the shot count in the first half with both sides totaling five apiece.
The Waves went on the attack in the early minutes of the second half leading to a goal in the 55th minute. Off a throw in, Tori Waldeck played the ball up the left side of the box before depositing a cross to Julia Quinonez who finished off a one touch in front of the goal. Moments later, Maulden made one of her five saves on the night off a strike from Peyton Leonard. CSUN would come close to evening the match on a Califf header that was on target before Rath made a clean save. Later in the match in the 81st minute, Pepperdine picked up a crucial insurance goal off a corner kick where Waldeck found Karina Gonzalez for a header.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
"I think it was a solid game from start to finish. It was a complete 90-minute game, which we hadn't put together one so far. Pepperdine is good. They are a very talented group and they're going to do really well this year. Obviously, I'm not happy with the result but I was really pleased with the execution of the game plan and the energy and the effort that the players on the field and on the bench brought today."
