LAST WEEK'S MATCHES
CSUN dropped a pair of hard-fought decisions to drop to 0-3-1 on the season. The Matadors would fall on the road at LMU 1-0 last Thursday then suffer a 2-0 loss to Pepperdine at Matador Soccer Field on Sunday night.
CSUN played LMU to a scoreless draw for nearly 89 full minutes in Thursday's match. However, a costly CSUN foul with 1:03 remaining in the contest would result in a penalty kick. LMU scored to take the lead on the PK before holding off CSUN in the final minute. CSUN was outshot 11-7 in the match but held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
In Sunday's match, CSUN and Pepperdine battled to a 0-0 tie through one half before the Waves hit the net in the 55th minute. The score remained 1-0 until the 81st minute when Pepperdine scored on set piece for a 2-0 advantage. Hayden Mauldin recorded five saves in front of the goal in defeat.
MATADOR HEADLINES
CSUN's defense has allowed the opposition to score just four total goals through the team's four matches this season. The four tallies are the least amount of goals given up to start a season since the 2017 team gave up three goals in four matches to begin that campaign.
In goal, Hayden Mauldin has played every minute thus far this season. Mauldin has 16 saves on the year to go with a .800 save percentage and 1.00 goals-against-average. With one shutout on the year, Mauldin came 1:03 away from another clean sheet against LMU before a penalty kick ended that bid.
Along with Mauldin, Angelica Claiborne has played every minute through four matches at 360 total minutes while Kacie Garrity has played 342 and Ashly Torres has played 340. Newcomer Paige Califf tops the team with five shots and four on goal.
SERIES HISTORY
CSUN has played Seattle U and Washington just once each in women's soccer. The Matadors collected a 3-1 home win over Seattle U during the 2010 season while Washington prevailed 3-1 in a neutral-site match in 2015.
SCOUTING SEATTLE U
The Redhawks (1-3) dropped both of their games last week against San Diego and Santa Clara by the scores of 1-0 and 2-0, respectively. The team's only win this season was a 5-0 triumph over Portland State on Aug. 20. A season ago, Seattle U went 11-6-3 with an 8-1-2 conference mark for a second-place finish in the WAC. The Redhawks were picked to finish third in the WAC this season by the league's head coaches. Jourdyn Curran tops the team with three goals this season while three others have one goal. A Preseason All-WAC selection, Kait Raffensperger has seen every minute on defense.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON
The Huskies (2-1-1) split their two matches last week, falling 5-1 to ranked Santa Clara before beating San Diego 5-0. Washington also defeated Idaho by a 3-1 final earlier this season. In 2022, Washington finished 10-6-3 and 4-6-1 in the Pac-12 for a seventh-place finish. The team was selected seventh in this season's Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll. Radisson Banks leads the squad with two goals and five points while seven others have one goal. Washington lost 10 of 11 primary starters from last season's roster with the team adding 11 freshmen and three transfers in the offseason.
