CSUN Earns Hard-Fought Scoreless Draw with UC Davis
9/21/2023 9:26:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer battled UC Davis to a 0-0 draw on Thursday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin collected seven saves, securing her second shutout of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC Davis pressured the Matador defense in the early going, generating six shots over the first 15 minutes of action. Hayden Mauldin was up to the task defensively for CSUN, recording four of her seven saves on the night in the first half. CSUN would withstand the pressure and begin creating scoring opportunities of its own. Izabel Reyes and Ashley Cruz both put shots on goal in the first half while CSUN earned three corner kicks in the period.
After intermission, Ashly Torres put a shot on frame in the opening minute while Reyes just missed the frame on a high header from inside the box. The Aggies picked up a pair of corner kicks in the 59th minute followed by a pair of shots attempts but neither hit the frame. Mauldin notched another save with a two-handed stop leaving her feet off a shot from Elise Picard. Moments later, CSUN had its best chance of the match after earning a corner kick. On the set piece, Torres found Paige Califf who headed a ball off the crossbar. The ball ricocheted downward on the goal line but the center official ruled it did not cross the line, negating a CSUN goal.Â
Â
Mauldin and the Matadors withstood a barrage of scoring threats from the Aggies in the closing minutes. CSUN's netminder made back-to-back saves beginning in the 83rd minutes including a timely save where she left her feet and tapped the ball over the crossbar.

NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"It was a really a fun game. I knew it would be very challenging, it's a conference game. Every time we play Davis, they give us a run for our money. I'm so proud of this group. It's starting to come together. They are believing and they never lost the faith. They are starting to show their true grit and grind. Obviously, we wanted the result, but I couldn't be happier with the production of play that they put out there and not conceding a goal."
