CSUN Faces UC Davis in Big West Home Opener, Travels to Fullerton

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer hosts its Big West home opener on Thursday night when the Matadors take on UC Davis at 7 p.m. The weekend wraps up on Sunday night with CSUN visiting Cal State Fullerton at 5 p.m.
HOW TO FOLLOW
Both games this week will be broadcast on ESPN+. Ghizal Hasan and Charlie Gonzalez have the call for Thursday's Big West home opener.
LAST WEEK'S MATCHES
CSUN opened Big West play last Thursday with a tight 2-1 loss at Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine scored in the 34th and 39th minutes to build a 2-0 lead. The Matadors would break through in the 59th minute when Paige Califf and Harlee Martin-Ditillo teamed up to assist Ashly Torres on her first career goal. CSUN looked for the equalizer down the stretch but Hawai'i controlled the clock to pick up the victory.
The Matadors finished off their non-conference schedule last Sunday with a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Portland State. CSUN rallied from two deficits in the match, tying the game with 20 minutes to go. The Vikings though hit the game winner in the 89th minute. Yoshi Rubalcava scored her first career goal in the 53rd minute while Ashley Cruz recorded her first goal of the season and fifth of her career in the 80th minute. Martin-Ditillo picked up her second assist in as many games on Cruz' goal.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Yoshi Rubalcava and Ashley Cruz became the third and fourth different Matador to score a goal this season in last week's games. Izabel Reyes and Ashly Torres have the other two CSUN goals this season. All four of CSUN's goals on the year have taken place in the second half of matches.
Hayden Mauldin had another solid week in front of the goal. She had nine saves in the 2-1 loss to Hawai'i while she notched seven more saves in the 3-2 defeat to Portland State. On the year, Mauldin has 51 saves through 10 matches. Her exploits have already moved her into CSUN's all-time top-10 saves list at No. 10 with 106 saves in her two-year career.
Four of the Matadors' nine losses this season have been by one goal including each of the last two matches. CSUN (0-9-1) has also played to a scoreless tie earlier this season at UNLV. After going without a goal through the first six contests this season, CSUN has scored four goals over its last four games.
SERIES HISTORY
CSUN leads UC Davis 8-7-4 in the all-time series but the Matadors have not defeated the Aggies since winning 4-0 on Oct. 16, 2014. Over the past seven meetings, UC Davis has won three times while the teams have tied four times. Last season, Cassidy Imperial-Pham hit the net versus the Aggies in a 1-1 tie in Davis.
Cal State Fullerton holds a 19-8-2 edge over CSUN. The Titans have won the last four in the series but three of those decisions were one-goal games including last year's 2-1 Fullerton victory. CSUN's last win in the series came on Oct. 7, 2018, while the Matadors have not won in Fullerton since Oct. 20, 2011.
SCOUTING UC DAVIS
UC Davis comes in with a 4-4-0 record on the year. Last week, UC Davis picked up a 3-0 victory over Eastern Washington to close non-conference play. The Aggies, who tied for second in The Big West last season, were picked to finish fifth in the league in 2023. Leslie Fregoso has scored four goals and registered 11 points, both good enough for fourth place in The Big West. Sam Tristan has tallied three goals while Risa Yamada and Devyn Simmons have two apiece. Caeley Goldstein has posted a 1.01 GAA with 26 saves in goal.
SCOUTING CAL STATE FULLERTON
The Titans have gone 2-4-4 overall and 0-1 in Big West play. Fullerton opened Big West play last Sunday with a 3-1 loss at UC Riverside. The Titans, who also were tied for second in The Big West in 2022, were selected fourth in the Big West Preseason Coaches Poll. Kaylin Raibon is tied for fourth in the conference in goals with four while Kaitlin Taylor has hit the net twice. In front of the goal, Mia Ranson has registered 1.44 goals-against-average to go with 47 saves.Â
