9/3/2023 3:10:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE, Wash.---For the second consecutive match, second half goals would be the difference as CSUN fell at Washington 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium. The Matadors kept the opposition off the scoreboard in the first half once again, but Washington broke the tie in the second half and added two tallies late to secure a victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN's defense would have to withstand a barrage of shots from the Huskies throughout the first half. Hayden Mauldin notched a pair of saves within a 1:09 span beginning in the eighth minute. Ioanna Papatheodorou nearly found the net from atop the box but the attempt hit the crossbar. Mauldin continued to shine on defense, stopping three more attempts starting in the 13th minute before making another stop in the 20th minute. A CSUN foul led to another Washington opportunity before Mauldin saved another shot from Papatheodorou. Mauldin finished with eight saves in the opening stanza.
Washington broke through in the 51st minute, taking advantage of a series of passes inside its own box. Radisson Banks finished the play from inside the six-yard mark with a left-footed shot. CSUN looked for the equalizer minutes after with Izabel Reyes missing a shot before the Matadors collected three consecutive corner kicks but Washington maintained its lead. The Huskies would double their lead in the 74th minute, following a CSUN deflection as Jadyn Holdenreid picked up the loose ball and scored from 18 yards. Washington added their third goal in the 87th minute, scoring on a penalty kick.
NOTES OF THE GAME
"This match was a tail of two halves. I was so proud of the way we battled and fought in the first half. The second half we were a different team. We are still figuring things out and we will have it right by conference play."
