CSUN Track & Field Opens Indoor Season at NAU

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field embarks on the 2024 indoor season on Friday when the Matadors travel to Northern Arizona's Friday Night Axe 'Em Open. The field events begin at 12 p.m. PT/1 p.m. MT followed by the running events at 2 p.m./3 p.m. MT

CSUN returned to indoor competition for the first time in three years last season with the Matadors posting a host of all-time top-10 performances to the school record book.
On the men's side, David Phillips, Jr. became the first Matador in 15 years to win an MPSF title when he won the 200m event by posting the second-fastest time in school history (:21.02). Logan Davis also broke a school record and won the 60m title at the MPSF's (:6.64), becoming the first Matador to win that event in 19 seasons while he also won the 400m title (:47.23) with the second-fastest time in team history as well.
CSUN returns 25 student-athletes on the men's team that competed in 2023 while 12 newcomers including seven transfers and five freshmen join the squad this year. A total of 44 are on this year's roster. Among the other standouts last season was Bryson Williams who finished second in the triple jump (48-2 1/2) and fourth in the long jump (23-0) at the MPSF's. Camilo Torres notched the third-fastest time in school history in the 5,000m (14:47.43) at the MPSF's. Noah Contreras also posted the eighth-fastest 800m time in CSUN indoor history (1:52.98) to finish third at the MPSF Championships.
On the women's team, Arianna Alexander broke the school record in the 60m (:7:43) at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational preliminaries before eventually finishing fourth at the MPSF Championships in the 60m as well as sixth in the 200m (:24.46).
The Matadors bring back 13 student-athletes who lettered in last season's indoor season with nine freshmen and seven transfers joining the team. A total of 38 make up the entire roster. Other standouts during the 2023 campaign include Alba Moreno Paredes who finished eighth in the high jump at the MPSF's (5-1 3/4). Katherine Shipp-Davis would place 10th in the shot out at the MPSF's (43-0 1/4) while Brianna Kelpis was ninth in the pentathlon at the conference championships (3,196).
UP NEXT
After this Friday's events, CSUN will travel to the Albuquerque, N.M. to compete at the New Mexico Team Open from Jan. 26-27.
