Â
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN secured an opening night victory against La Sierra, 70-56 on Nov. 4, at Premier America Credit Union Arena. Angie Ned celebrated her first head coaching victory as the Matadors were led by senior Erica Adams, who had her first career double-double (12 points and 10 rebounds). The Matadors headed into half time trailing 39-28, but they outscored their opponent 42-17 in the second half as CSUN started to drain their three-point shots. Kelly Tumlin and Nnenna Orji both added nine points in the win. The defense was key, as the Matadors tallied 28 points off turnovers, and held La Sierra scoreless in the final 3:39.
Â
CSUN then took to the road as they traveled to Logan, Utah for a bout against Utah State on Friday night. A stellar night from freshman Yves Cox as she recorded her first double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds in just her second collegiate game. The Matador defense was on point throughout the entirety of this one, as they held Utah State to 26.3% shooting from the field, and 23.4% from three respectively. The key to this game was getting to the free throw line, as the Matadors went 22-30. It ultimately led to a score of 69-65, as CSUN recorded it's second straight victory.
Â
THE LONE SENIOR LEADS THE WAY
The senior guard from Oakland, Erica Adams, picked up right where she left off last season. On opening night against La Sierra, she managed to pick up her first career double-double. She tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds, and even added five assists as well. In the second game against Utah State, she was a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe with eight rebounds and two assists. She also led all players with 38 minutes played against the Aggies.
Â
THREES FOR NUMBER THREE
Kelly Tumlin is looking to be the most reliable option from deep so far this season. In the first game against La Sierra, she got all of her nine points from beyond the arc, shooting 50% from deep (3-6). Going on the road didn't stop her, either. The junior from San Ramon drained three more three-pointers while scoring 15 points overall. Tumlin also played the second most minutes (35) as well.
Â
STELLAR PERFORMANCE FROM THE FRESHMAN
Yves Cox in just her second career game, got her first double-double against Utah State on Friday. The center from Savannah, TX scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. She was efficient as well, as she made eight field goals on 11 attempts, while only playing 25 minutes. Cox made her presence known on the defensive side of the ball as well, she had two blocks in the victory.
Â
SCOUTING USC
The Trojans are #3 in the country this week, thanks in large part to the sophomore phenom, Juju Watkins. In USC's first game against Ole Miss on Nov.4 which took place in France, Watkins played 40 minutes, had 27 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in the 68-66 win over the Rebels.
Â
In their second game against Big West's own Cal Poly, the Trojans were dominant as they beat the Mustangs 90-35 to move to 2-0 on the young campaign. USC mounted a 28-0 scoring run during the first quarter to establish control in the game, and the Trojans held a 57-17 lead at halftime. Watkins and freshman Kayleigh Heckel led USC in scoring with 16 points apiece.
Â
Series History: USC currently leads the series history 20-11 against the Matadors. The last time these two squared off was Dec. 15, 2022. USC won that bout, 76-51.
