CSUN Tennis Returns Home to Host San José State on Sunday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Tennis (3-0, 1-0 Big West) returns to Matador Tennis Complex on Sunday morning to take on San José State at 11 a.m.
CSUN OPENS AT 3-0
The Matadors officially opened the spring dual season with three wins over a four-day period. CSUN began Big West play with a 7-0 victory over UC Riverside last Thursday at Matador Tennis Complex. Just over 24 hours later, the Matadors traveled to Santa Clara and knocked off San Francisco 6-1. CSUN wrapped up the busy weekend with a 5-2 triumph over host Santa Clara on Sunday morning. CSUN's 3-0 start is the team's second such start over the last three seasons.
ZHYTELNA EARNS BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior Yuliia Zhytelna received her second career Big West Player of the Week award on Feb. 21. Zhytelna was a perfect 3-0 in singles competition last week, all wins from the No. 2 position. Against UC Riverside last Thursday, Zhytelna defeated Maya Youssef in three sets after an opening set loss (5-7, 6-4, 6-1). She would accomplish that same feat on Friday against San Francisco's Hana Gamracy where she ultimately prevailed 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Zhytelna wrapped up the week with a straight set win over Santa Clara's Finley Kalinic 6-1, 6-1. In doubles play, Zhytelna and Turchak charted a 6-0 victory over Brionna Nguyen and Kamya Nair of UC Riverside. The duo's other victory would come over Santa Clara's tandem of JennaMarie Gordon and Velizara Fileva, 6-2.
MATADOR LEADERS
Three Matadors have spotless 3-0 records in singles competition to begin 2024. Along with reigning Big West Player of the Week Yuliia Zhytelna, Emma Moratalla Sanz and newcomer Nicole West have gone 3-0 to start the spring campaign. The trio of Sasha Turchak, Victoria Santibañez Luna and Tallia Harper are each 2-1 in singles.
CSUN has yet to lose in doubles play thus far this season. At No. 1, Turchak and Zhytelna are 2-0 while No. 2 doubles team Santibañez Luna and Cindy Ung and the No. 3 doubles team Angela Ho and Elena Goodman are each 2-0.
SCOUTING SAN JOSÉ STATE
The Spartans are a perfect 4-0 on the season. The team cracked the top-75 ITA rankings at No. 72 this week. Two of the Spartans four wins have come against Big West teams in UC Riverside and Cal Poly. Last Friday, SJSU knocked off Saint Mary's 4-3. Last season, the Spartans finished 11-13 overall. At No. 1 singles, Carolina Millan holds a 4-0 record in dual competition while Irena Muradyan and Cheuk Ying Shek are 4-0 in doubles play.
Series History: CSUN leads SJSU 7-2 in the all-time series with three wins in four home duals. The teams last played in 2022 with CSUN coming out top 5-2 at home.
