CSUN Tennis to Host Four Matches This Week

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Tennis (3-1) opens a five-match homestand with four home duals slated for this week. The Matadors host Weber State at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon to kick off the homestand before facing Louisiana Tech on Monday at 2 p.m., Youngstown State on Thursday at 2 p.m. and Cal Poly on Friday at noon in a Big West match.
LAST TIME OUT
CSUN dropped its first dual of the season to San José State, 4-1, last Sunday at Matador Tennis Complex. The Matadors earned the doubles point in the match with No. 1 duo Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna winning 6-1 and No. 2 tandem Victoria Santibañez Luna and Cindy Ung prevailing 6-4. The Spartans though pulled out four singles victories including three tight straight set decisions to claim the match.
CSUN AT USC CANCELED
The Matadors' slated game at No. 40 USC on Saturday, March 1 was canceled due to rain. There is no plan to reschedule the game.
MATADOR LEADERS
Despite last Sunday's loss, CSUN remains unbeaten in doubles play this season. Turchak and Zhytelna along with Santibañez Luna and Ung are a perfect 3-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively. Angela Ho and Elena Goodman have teamed up to post a 2-0 record on the year.
In singles action, Emma Moratalla Sanz is a perfect 3-0 on the year at the No. 4 position while Turchak and Zhytelna boast 3-1 records at the No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Tallia Harper has also posted a winning record with a 2-1 mark in dual play.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS
Weber State is 5-3 on the season and coming off a conference-opening 6-1 win over Portland State last Sunday. Last season, the Wildcats went 12-9 overall and won the Big Sky Conference, eventually advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Ana Morett leads the team in dual wins as she holds a 13-8 record at No. 1 this season while she has teamed with Megan Davies to an 11-10 doubles record.
Series History: CSUN leads Weber State 7-5 all-time, but the teams have not played since 2001.
Louisiana Tech holds a 10-4 record on the season with wins in four straight including two in conference play. LA Tech finished at 20-6 overall last season. Olga Bienzobas has a 12-1 record this season in dual play at No. 1 while she has teamed with Alexia Romero to a 7-6 doubles record.
Series History: CSUN is 1-0 against LA Tech all-time in women's tennis with that win coming in 2020 (4-1).
Youngstown State sports a 2-9 record in 2024 with losses in three-straight duals. In 2023, the Penguins finished 11-9 overall and 6-0 in conference play, winning the Horizon League and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Lorena Cedeno has gone 5-6 in singles play in leading the team in wins while the combination of Yesenila Ovcharova and Lili Minich are 6-2 in doubles play.Â
Series History: CSUN sports a perfect 5-0 record over YSU with its most recent win coming in 2022 (5-2).
Cal Poly has gone 4-5 on the year with a 1-0 record in Big West play as the Mustangs defeated UC Davis on Feb. 3. Last season, the Mustangs finished 14-11 overall and advanced to the Big West Championship final before falling to Hawai'i. Four different Mustangs have a team-high five singles wins in dual play with Peyton Dunkle holding a record at 5-2. Dunkle and Delanie Dunkle have gone 6-2 in doubles play on the year.
Series History: The Matadors lead Cal Poly 31-28 in the all-time series. CSUN claimed a 4-3 decision in San Luis Obispo last season, but Cal Poly returned the favor with a semifinal win in the Big West Championship by a 4-0 final.
